of the Heart!" Head on over and take a look!
Theme Park - Master theme maker Michael Rabe has added
two new themes to the Doghouse:
A MacOS X theme "Glass" v2.0 and a Classic Christmas
theme titled "GlassWorks Christmas." For all your Theme
Making needs, take a trip over to the Doghouse!
The America Online/AT&T Connection - As we reported
last
week, AOL/Mac customers using version 5.0 of America Online's
software are experiencing connectivity problems. MacMonkies
recently spoke with a local AT&T Broadband technician
and discovered that his daughter's Mac connected using AOL 5.0
via AT&T with no problems. We decided to do a little digging.
Here's what we came up with:
AOL 5.0 Revision 19.43 and Revision 20.9 will
NOT allow connection if using AT&T Broadband
Internet as your internet service provider. However, if you can
find a CD with AOL 5.0 Revision 19.29,
you will have connectivity. We have been using the older version
the last few days with no problems.
We contacted both AT&T and America Online regarding this
information. America Online is looking into it. We will keep
you posted as we learn more.
Note: We would like to caution anyone using older versions
of any software that you may experience conflicts, bugs, and
perhaps even crashes.
Insanely Great! - Steve Jobs is keeping good company
this holiday season with the likes of Stephen Speilburg, Donald
Trump and, yes, even Bill Gates. All of these men have showed
up on Forbes' list of Americas Most Fascinating Tycoons. Winners
on the list were determined in part by mention of the tycoon's
names in the media and the number of articles written about them.
Apparently the public views Jobs as "a savvy businessman
and a creative genius." Forbes viewed Jobs as "an alternate
take on Bill Gates..." who is like a "tortured artiste
who creates 'insanely great' products like the iPod." Jobs
and Gates were two of four technology bosses mentioned on the
list. - From MacCentral
Name That Tune - The Dutch Company Royal Philips Electronics
NV will bring us a technological way to identify songs and artists
sometime next year. All that is required to identify songs and
artists is a "digital fingerprint" of the song. In
other words, a person plays 3 seconds of a song into a cell phone,
and the 3-second recording acts as a digital fingerprint and
is sent to a database identifying the song title and artist in
a matter of 4 seconds. The information is sent back to the cell
phone and appears on the screen of the cell phone. Now we will
have a new way to "Name That Tune." -
from Excite
Dr. iBott - iPod now has a cassette tape adapter put
out by Dr. Bott. It is called iPod Connection Kit 2. An FM Transmitter
is bundled with the original iPod Connection Kit. The kit includes:
- Auto Charger for iPod
- FM Stereo Transmitter
- 2 AAA batteries (for FM transmitter)
- Mini Stereo Extension Cable (male/female)
- Mini Stereo to RCA Cable
- Mini Stereo Connection Cable (male/male)
- iPod Carry Pouch
The new kit will cost $47.95 and will ship late December and
can be pre-ordered today. - from Dr.
Bott
Who's Monopoly Is It Anyway? - While Bill Gates is
accused of having a monopoly, Apple boasted of having a monopoly
of its own. The December 17th issue Newsweek magazine featured
an ad for Mac OS X with the slogan "The only thing we have
a monopoly on is compliments." In addition, there are also
"six quotes from technology writers praising Mac OS X"
written on the ad. - from MacMinute
Drum Roll Please - There have been some interesting
developments regarding Steve Jobs' speech at the MacWorld Expo
in San Francisco. First of all, his speech has been moved up
a day to January 7, 2001. Secondly, an extra hour has been allocated
for the speech. This suggests that perhaps Jobs will be introducing
a lot of exciting new Apple products to cheer us up after the
post-holiday blues. Some ideas on what he will be introducing
include "a new iMac, Power Macs clocking in at over 1GHz,"
and "that Macs will be shipping with OS X as the default
OS." Steve, we are waiting with bated
breath...bring on the post Holiday cheer! - from MacUser
Sweet Tooth - A candy bar that is big enough to feed
100,000 people is on show at the Port Aventura theme park in
Catalonia. At 30 feet long and weighing a ton, it is the biggest
nougat bar in the world. The nougat bar was created by ten cooks
who mixed together a ton of almonds, chocolate and sugar. Half
of the candy bar is to be sold to customers at the theme park
and the other half is to be given away. - from
Excite
Jars of Apples - The
band Jars of Clay
head straight into a Mac-based studio in Nashville when inspiration
hits. With a couple Power Macs, a pair of iMacs, four iBooks,
two PowerBooks, and ProTools and a Digi 001, Jars of Clay put
their recordings straight to the hard disk for further polishing
of the apple. - from Apple

Have you Heard?
Adobe Photoshop 7.0 - Word
has it that Adobe Photoshop 7.0 (compatible with Mac OSX) will
be out sometime in April of next year. It is currently still
in the beta stage. A preview of the beta version may shown at
the Macworld Expo next month.
Apple Seed - Apple may be releasing OS X v10.1.2 sometime
soon, which will fix bugs as well as provide support for infra-red
modems and PC card slots on G3 Powerbooks. The update has reportedly
been released to developers and is believed to be in the final
stages before it becomes available to the public.
Startup Doubler - According
to Marc Moini's web site,
a Mac OS 9.2.2 version of Startup
Doubler will be available later this week.

TWAS A COMPUTER CHRISTMAS
'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the shop,
The computers were whirring; they never do stop.
The power was on and the temperature right,
In hopes that the input would feed back that night.
The system was ready, the program was coded,
And memory drums had been carefully loaded;
While adding a Christmasy glow to the scene,
The lights on the console, flashed red, white and green.
When out in the hall there arose such a clatter,
The programmer ran to see what was the matter.
Away to the hallway he flew like a flash,
Forgetting his key in his curious dash.
He stood in the hallway and looked all about,
When the door slammed behind him, and he was locked out.
Then, in the computer room what should appear,
But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer;
And a little old man, who with scarcely a pause,
Chuckled: "My name is Santa...the last name is Claus."
The computer was startled, confused by the name,
Then it buzzed as it heard the old fellow exclaim:
"This is Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen,
And Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen."
With all these odd names, it was puzzled anew;
It hummed and it clanked, and a main circuit blew.
It searched in its memory core, trying to "think";
Then the multi-line printer went out on the blink.
Unable to do its electronic job,
It said in a voice that was almost a sob:
"Your eyes - how they twinkle - your dimples so merry,
Your cheeks so like roses, your nose like a cherry,
Your smile - all these things, I've been programmed to know,
And at data-recall, I am more than so-so;
But your name and your address (computers can't lie),
Are things that I just cannot identify.
You've a jolly old face and a little round belly,
That shakes when you laugh like a bowlful of jelly;
My scanners can see you, but still I insist,
Since you're not in my program, you cannot exist!"
Old Santa just chuckled a merry "ho, ho",
And sat down to type out a quick word or so.
The keyboard clack-clattered, its sound sharp and clean,
As Santa fed this "data" to the machine:
"Kids everywhere know me; I come every year;
The presents I bring add to everyone's cheer;
But you won't get anything - that's plain to see;
Too bad your programmers forgot about me."
Then he faced the machine and said with a shrug,
"Merry Christmas to All," as he pulled out its plug!

SMILES
Smiling is infectious, you catch it like the flu,
When someone smiled at me today, I started smiling
too.
I passed around the corner and someone saw my grin
When he smiled I realized I'd passed it on to him
I thought about that smile then I realized its worth,
A single smile, just like mine, could travel round
the earth.
So, if you feel a smile begin, don't leave it undetected
Let's start an epidemic quick, and get the world infected!
