No bones about it, Michael Rabe at
DoghouseOnline
is one of the most dedicated, persistent artists around in the Mac GUI community. Michael's talent creating schemes and themes for MacOS has even put him under fire from the "Big Guns." And when the smoke clears, he is still standing! Perhaps most impressive and humbling is that when all is said and done, Michael gives credit to yet another creator --"To God Be the Glory."

We tip our hat to TheDoghouseOnline!

Macworld Expo Wraps Up Though Apple fell short of exhibiting "the most important Macworld Conference ever," there was no shortage of new software announcements and other good news for Apple fans.

  • The conference began on a positive note as Apple announced a $61 million net profit for their third quarter.
  • On Wednesday, Steve jobs announced Apple's new line-up of Macs, including a face-lift for the new G-4's. Apple did not surpass the GHz "barrier." They did, however, focus on the Megahertz Myth.
  • Mac OS 10.1 was demonstrated and a September ship date was announced.

Plenty of new software was announced (especially for OSX) as well as Microsoft pumping up the show by announcing its continued support for Apple with apps like Media Player, MSN Messenger, and Office 10 for OSX. As the Macworld Expo wrapped up events, Apple announced the Best of Show awards:

  • Apple OS 10.1
  • Apple 867 MHz PowerMac G4
  • Asante FriendlyNet Wireless Ready Cable/DSL Router
  • Canon D2400UF
  • DiamondSoft Font Reserve Server for OS X
  • IBM ViaVoice for OS X
  • MicroMat Drive 10
  • Microsoft Office 2001 for OS X
  • SmartDisk FireLite 5GB FireWire Hard Drive
  • Toon Boom
  • Xerox Phaser 860

The Macworld Expo may not have achieved its goal of being the "most important ever," but Apple fans certainly did not walk away empty handed. Even when an apple falls, great discoveries tend to be made!

Code Red Virus Targets White House Last week, a worm type virus named "Code Red" infected over 225,000 servers. Specifically, computers vulnerable to the attack are those running the server software on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000. It is the worst of its kind in years. The purpose of the virus was "to gather strength by infecting more computers and then have them all attack a numerical Internet address that represents the White House Web site." It was to accomplish its goal with a denial of service by flooding the computer with large excessive amounts of information. The White house escaped the attack by rerouting its traffic to an alternate address. Microsoft was not so lucky. ZDNet reports that "One of the servers on its www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com domain was infected with the worm Thursday and displayed the trademark 'Hacked by Chinese!' defacement." Hmmm...Got Mac?!

You Win! You Lose! A computer glitch creates havoc for America Online. While participating in an online contest, several AOL users (possibly hundreds) were told they won $10,000! One "winner" even called three times to verify their winning status. Twice the person was "guaranteed' to be a winner. However, the third time they were told of the computer glitch and offered a $200 gift certificate and three free months of AOL in place of the "grand prize." -from Excite News

Have you Heard?

MacMonkies learned about two weeks ago that the Mac OS 9.2 had gone Golden Master and that it would be available by the time of the Expo. This is somewhat true. According to Apple's Tech Info Library, Mac OS 9.2 is only available with the Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver) computer.

As expected, Micromat's Drive 10, "the first and final disk utility for OSX," is now shipping!

Dantz Development has announced a carbonized version of its back-up software, Retrospect for release this fall. Retrospect 5.0 will be compatible with OS9 and OSX. If interested, you can download a beta version of Retrospect Client HERE.

Alias|Wavefront's Maya Software for Mac OS X will ship by September 25th. They are now accepting pre-orders for this professional 3-D animation and effects package.

PROVERBS FOR THE MILLENNIUM

  • Home is where you hang your @.
  • The e-mail of the species is more deadly than the mail.
  • A journey of a thousand sites begins with a single click.
  • You can't teach a new mouse old clicks.
  • Great groups from little icons grow.
  • Speak softly and carry a cellular phone.
  • C:\ is the root of all directories.
  • Oh, what a tangled website we weave when we first practice.
  • The modem is the message.
  • Too many clicks spoil the browse.
  • The geek shall inherit the earth.
  • There's no place like <http://www.home.com>
  • Don't byte off more than you can view.
  • Fax is stranger than fiction.
  • What boots up must come down.
  • Virtual reality is its own reward.

MonkieBarrel

 Editor's Notes

 Coconut Juice!

Of all the work done at MacMonkies, the MonkieBarrel is always saved for last. Why? Because it is the HARDEST!! Think about it...It is the editor's opportunity to be a bit more personable, share thoughts on a variety of topics (that's rambling in English) and overall just trying to put the final touches on things. HA!

Well, it was worth a shot! When it comes down to it, even some of the mouthiest of us run out of things to say on occasion. On second thought, maybe that's why we talk so much...Cuz we really don't have that much to say to begin with! Or maybe it's cuz we have consumed too much Coconut Juice (non-alcoholic, of course!). Oh well!

I do want to say thanks again for all your support and patience. Cheers to all of the guests at MacMonkies.

In addition to our guests, I would like to say thanks to a small group of people that without them, much of this mess would not have been possible. Please take a look at the bottom of the About page to see to whom we are very grateful.

Finally, there are still good things ahead! The Recommended Software section is still under way and along side will be our Audio Department. No completion dates have been set, but we won't sleep till they are finished! Well, that might be a tad bit exaggerated!

Until next time...Pasta la Taco!
