Apple of America - A thousand plus people lined up
outside to welcome the opening of Apple's newest store inside
the Mall of America. One couple arrived at 2am to be the first
two in line for the festivities. Once the doors opened for business,
the waiting crowd let out a cheer that rang throughout the mall.
The Mall of America Apple store is the fourth store to be opened.
Stop by MacMinute
to view pictures of this successful opening. Next in line is
the Woodfield
store in Schaumburg IL, scheduled to open on August 25th.
MonkieNews - The new GUI Department at MacMonkies
will be opening early next month! Check back soon for additional
details. For now, take a look at the new selections in the Gallery!
Happy Birthday to Who? - Various news sources across
the Net are singing Happy 20th Birthday to the PC. However, although
it was in its "primitive" state - as quoted by CNET
- it was Apple that introduced
the desktop computer in 1976. Though Apple computers are not
considered a PC by "IBM compatible" standards, they
are personal computers. Even CNET states that "people
who used PCs--mainly academics and scientists conducting mathematic
research or laboratory simulations--said the IBM machine (introduced
in 1981) was inferior to the polished Apple II." This would
indicate that their is a good chunk of history prior to the introduction
of the IBM computer. The "20th anniversary" of the
PC also marks the first year of negative growth in the industry.
MacUser
gives a brief history of the personal computer since its introduction
in 1976.
CD Killers! - InterTrust Technologies and DataPlay
have teamed up to put an end to CD's as we know them today. "This
whole music piracy problem isn't going to go away until the CD
dies," said Talal Shamoon, senior vice president at InterTrust.
The two companies are working on the development of secure digital
media in an attempt to end to music piracy by doing away with
the compact disc. The two companies will put out security technology,
copy-protected discs that can hold up to 11 hours of pre-recorded
music. Blank discs will also be available. Unfortunately, many
believe they will have their work cut out for them entering the
market because the CD industry is a already well established
and accepted market. - from ZDNet
Cyber Blood - Sometimes it's like giving blood to get
on the Net. Soon you can get on the Net while giving blood!
Baxter International Inc. has designed an e-chair in which
blood donors will be able to recline in an ergonomically designed
chair "equipped with a computer, a DVD player, computer
monitor and keyboard, Internet connectivity and stereo headphones."
It is designed for donors who stay would take up to two hours.

PDF Files Carry Virus - Last week, McAfee
antivirus learned of a virus that is embedded in Adobe's
PDF files. The virus known as "Peachy" uses the PDF
file to spread. However, only those using the full version of
Adobe Acrobat -- the application that creates the PDF file --
are affected. Consumers that use Acrobat Reader, the free PDF
file viewer, are not susceptible. Though the virus is currently
considered low risk, there is concern that the PDF format will
become a "new frontier" for transmitting viruses. Now ain't that peachy! --from ZDNet
Windows XP for Early Release - Earlier last week,
it was learned that Microsoft gave the go ahead to PC manufacturers
to ship their new hardware complete with XP, the company's new
operating system. This, however, with the official release date
being October 25th, is one month earlier than expected. Many
are speculating that Microsoft is making such a moving to block
any injunction that might delay its release. Others are saying
it "could help jump-start stagnant sales." .Lately Mr. Clinton and Mr. Gates both seem to fit
the bill: they both won't seem to vanish from the camera's eye!

Mad Cow Disease - A new malady is
spreading world wide among the cow community at a very rapid
pace: REVENGE! Apparently, after years of "cow tipping,"
cow jokes, and cow slamming in general, the cow community has
decided to fight back. One cow was overheard saying, "I
just can't take it anymore! I'm tempted to just jump on
the patty wagon!" Another said she was tired of being considered
no more than "chopped liver." In an effort to overcome
this discrimination, the ladies have united and decided to fight
back. Some have chosen the less aggressive cow path and will
seek out education, placement in the job force, or social activity.
Others had simply had it and are forming gangs with the intent
of seeking vengeance. These fat bottomed girls mean business.
MacMonkies recently spotted a biker cow that had recently
joined one of the gangs. CLICK HERE to

What Could Have Been - Shortly before the Macworld
Expo last month, there were flocks of rumors flying about like
geese on their way South for the Winter. One much anticipated
arrivals that never made an appearance at the show was the redesigned
iMac. Though by no means a debut at MacMonkies, this picture
displays one person's vision for Apple's future iMac. CLICK

Slip Slidin'
Away! |
Ah, another day another fifty-cents...or
was that
FIFTY DOLLARS?
Sometimes I wonder if anybody even takes
the time to read the "notes" from the editor. I know
I seldom do when I pick up a magazine. Regardless, if you did
read last week's MonkieBarrel, the offer still stands: If I don't
have the...well, I will let you go BACK
and peak.
If you look around now you will notice
some changes. The most noticeable is on the Gallery
page. It has preview "thumbs" of the new selections
at the page. Soon their will be a "special" preview
page for the new work - and I do mean special.
Not much else is new right now. I
will, however, be making a very special announcement by September
12th. So stop back soon and see what's up in the Banana Tree!
Take Care!
P.S. Seem a bit scattered? YES!
