News On The Net...
Antiquated Apple design - The website of the Bremsstrahlung
Recordings record label has been designed to look like the
old Mac Operating System 6. Josh Russell, who runs the
record label, decided to go with the System 6 look because "it's
clean and minimal" and also "nostalgic." The black-and-white
System 6, which fits on a floppy disk, was used in 1989 and made
Apple famous for being "easy to use." Christopher Murphy
designed System 6 using MacPaint and Photoshop, and though it
looks simple, each page is made up of more than twenty Photoshop
layers. - from Wired
X Hacks The Box - A student at the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology has figured out how to hack into the security system
of Microsoft's Xbox. Andrew Huang says there is a "secret
boot block" encoded into the media processor chip of the
Xbox. He got to it by "tapping the data path that travels
between the media chip and the central processor" and "attaching
a custom-designed board to that high-speed data path." This
enabled Huang to process the data manually and figure it out.
He posted his discovery on his website and has not yet been asked
to take it down. - from
Yahoo
Access Approved - Judges have shot down a law that
would require school libraries
to install filtering software on school computers to keep children
off of inappropriate (sexually explicit) websites.
The judges said that appropriate websites would also be filtered
out if the software was installed. There are options when it
comes to monitoring what children view at school, including parental
consent for the child to surf the net or that a parent actually
be present while the child surfs the net. This is the third time
this law was denied. No
steps forward, 10 steps back. - from Excite
Down The Toilet? - A former Edwardian public toilet in
London will be available as a duplex
apartment in six months. The toilet facility has been out of
service for ten years and is now being remodeled. Property owners
think it will sell or rent without a problem because it is in
a good location. It will be worth $200,000 when the remodeling
is complete. Hmmm. Lemme
see. Dear John... - from Excite
Mo Monkie, Man! - Stephen Morgan is fighting for custody
of Chutney, a capuchin monkey.
Morgan is from West Sussex, and had been keeping Chutney in an
enclosed garden in the family's backyard. He even bought the
monkey its own Playstation console, which it took to bed faithfully
every night. Authorities are keeping Chutney in Wales until it
is determined whether or not Morgan will be granted a "dangerous
and wild animal license." Morgan's
da man! Ya think he'll adopt this monkie?
- from Ananova
Have you Heard?
Elements Of A Photo Finish - Are you looking for a powerful, yet easy-to-use,
photo editor to help you produce professional-looking photos,
whether you use a traditional or digital camera? We know you
don't want to fork out the wods of cash for an app that the pro's
use. So how about Adobe's
Photoshop Elements? Still don't want to pay a hundred bucks?
How about $69? Now through July 31, 2002 you can land a copy
of Photoshop Elements for 30 bucks off the list price if you
own one of the listed products mentioned on their site. Plus
you can always try before you buy with their free Elements Tryout.
Head over to Adobe
and see if you qualify for this cool Summer deal!
Big On iMacs
- More word is filtering in that Apple may soon be releasing
iMacs with larger screen sizes. DigiTimes
reports that Quanta, the company which is building iMacs for
Apple, is expected to begin making iMacs with 17-inch and 19-inch
monitors for the third quarter. Some sources expect the new iMacs
to be out by the New Year, or perhaps as early as Christmas.

World's Smallest Website - As we were recently browsing about the Internet
Super Highway, we stumbled across, or rather, almost STEPPED
ON a place claimed to be the World's Smallest Website: guimp.com!
This ever so teeny tiny site is available in both Flash and HTML
versions and you have the choice of fun or news. Fun? Oh yes!
You can actually have a rather tiny match against the site playing
miniature Pong.
We hope you have recently had your eyes
checked for you may have to break out the bi-focals or maybe
even a magnifying glass! They may be small in size, but they're
big on fun! Check out guimp.com!

THE IBM DIFFERENCE
What's the difference between IBM and Jurassic
Park?
One is a fantasy theme park populated with
dinosaurs, and the other is a movie.
ONLY IN AMERICA
Only in America...
Can a pizza get to your house faster than
an ambulance.
Are there handicap parking places in front
of a skating rink.
Do banks leave both doors open and then
chain the pens to the counters.
Do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and
buns in packages of eight.
Do we use the word politics to describe
the process so well. Poli in Latin meaning many and tics meaning
blood sucking creatures.
ARE WHAT YOU EAT
If it's true that you are what you eat,
then some would be one part Cheez Whiz and one part Spam.
FAVORITE SPACE
What is an astronaut's favorite key on a
computer keyboard?
The space bar.
LUSER MANUAL
If you use the system in a dirty environment,
open it periodically and vacuum the boards and components with
a small vacuum designed for this kind of work. Don't loosen anything
in the process--sucking all the chips off the system board with
an industrial strength wet/dry vac is not covered by your warranty.
- Gateway 2000 User Manual
SHORT ATTENTION SPAN
Woman in a computer store to the sales assistant:
I want a game capable of holding the interest of my six-year-old,
but it's got to be simple enough for his father to play, too.
BETTER NOT TO KNOW ME
Acquaintance:
A person you know well enough to borrow from, but not well enough
to lend to.
SO THERE!
A computer can make as many mistakes in
two seconds as 20 men make in 20 years.
THE JOY OF COMMUNICATION
Don't assume that you're always going to
be understood. I wrote a column that one should put a cup of
liquid in the cavity of a turkey when roasting it. Someone wrote
me that "the turkey tasted great, but the plastic cup melted."
- Heloise

would put a smile on an Ape Face? Check out MacMonkies'

Odds and Ends
The "F" Factor
Read the following sentence:
FINISHED FILES ARE THE RESULT OF YEARS OF
SCIENTIFIC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS.
---- ANSWER ----
There are six F's in the sentence. One of
average intelligence finds three of them.
If you spotted four, you're above average.
If you got five, you can turn your nose at most anybody.
If you caught six, you are a genius.
There is no catch. Many people forget the
"OF"'s. The human brain tends to see them as V's and
not F's.
Nothing To Lose
Ever notice that when you've got nothing
to lose, you always have something to brag about?

Old Monkie! |
Well! I honestly don't
know how many folks actually come WAY down here to read the tiny
print. I would hope that all of you were MacMonkie Heads like
some and read every last piece of punctuation every week at MacMonkies.
But realistically, I know that I even miss the marks here and
there.
But strangely enough,
there are quite a few dedicated Simians out there as we just
finished up the month of May with over 1.3 million hits! And
since January, we have surpassed the 3 million mark and are very
close to four!
THANK
YOU!
Adding to all the crazy
math, MacMonkies will turn a whopping 1 year old in less than
a month!
WOW!
We hope to present all
things in celebration at that time.
So grab them Bananas and
keep 'em peeled!
