 Cash
Versus Computers -
Apple and Microsoft have entered talks regarding a Microsoft
settlement in which Microsoft
would give cash and software to schools. Apple is arguing
that Microsoft should strictly give cash to schools
and let them choose which computers they want to purchase.
According to Bloomberg, Microsoft has entered talks
with Apple to try to avoid lengthy court procedures.
The lawsuit is worth $1.1 billion. Apple
and Microsoft in talks...I would like to see Steve
and Bill in the
same room together 'talking.' - from PC Pro
Space
Travel To New Heights - The recent Columbia
tragedy could encourage different types of space travel.
Scientists are working on developing a space elevator.
It would
start
with a thin carbon ribbon one
meter wide that runs from the Earth up into space. An elevator
could then be attached to this ribbon to carry materials
or people into space. The elevator alone would cost $10
million to build, but the possibility of this space elevator
could be reached in as soon as fifteen years. That's
one elevator ride that might make me sick to my stomach. -

GOO!
New Desktops -
Time to spiff up your Desktop with 7 slick new pixel
works from our Wednesday Desktop Update. Let's dig!
3
Dimensional - Up to his usual warped sense
of self is Rampant
Mac's Scott Chitwood with a perfect
pixel portrait: Melted
Mind. Proceed with extra caution
with this one, as it is sure to provide your eyes with
too much fun and a slide to the side.
Sliding
into our second slot is Searching
2 from the amazing
mind of Terraholic's Martin
Schulte. Martin really paints the skies a beautiful
array of colors with this wonderful 3-D portrait.
Making
sure all your i's are crossed and your t's are dotted
(yes, that's intentional) is dotcom from Jack
Juliussen,
who hangs his amazing works in the galleries of Prevision.
This minimalistic to-the-point work is an eye pleaser
for cyber heads of all walks.
Nature -
Back from Down Under, Michael
Heath will warm your winter blues with Nobbies
Beach.
If your winter is filled with that cold white stuff
as it is here, this great beach shot is a sure thing
to
take your thoughts away from the fridgies!
Desktops -
Diggin' into our Desktop Department is a cool creation
from EMKdesign's Evan
Kaufman called amplified.
Evan turns up the techno and gives you a blast with
this great number!
If
you want things to get really loud, check out breathless
2 from
Glenn
Farjado! This astonishing piece from Glenn won't
even give your eyes a second chance. You will
be amazed!
Wrapping
up this week's Desktop Edition is MacMonkies' Bradford
Wiles with a humble tribute to those
who lost their
lives
in the
Columbia Space Shuttle. The desktop
was actually made a day or 2 before the catastrophe
using Bryce 5 and Photoshop 7. It was titled after
hearing the news -- whether to their loved ones on
Earth, or reaching to the Creator in the Heavens, they
were Homeward
Bound.
Thanks

The
Iconfactory Updates CandyBar - The
folks over at The
Iconfactory just keep the GUI goodies
coming your way! Just released from The Factory and
Panic is CandyBar 1.5. This new version
adds support for iContainers, a new way to package
and distribute icons. The Iconfactory describes them
this way:
iContainers
are, in essence, a large group of icons packaged into
one handy container - a single
file. As they apply to CandyBar, iContainers allow users
to import and export entire CandyBar icon sets in one
fell swoop. Users can send their favorite icon settings
to friends as a simple e-mail attachment, and can download
entire collections from the Internet with a single click.
Icon authors can also embed vital information into iContainers
such as their name and e mail address, ensuring full
credit
of their custom distributed icons.
This
is SO cool. How do you top the coolness of cool? There's
MORE cool goodies that come with CandyBar 1.5 and the
upgrade is free to previously registered users! Hurry
over to The Iconfactory and
grab the latest update of
CandyBar
1.5. GO ALREADY!

Selective
Song Swapping - Jim Speth, ex-programmer for
Apple, is developing an application for Mac OS X called
iCommune
that will allow users to share songs over their computers
with closed groups. Speth hopes to avoid legal trouble
because using his application would be like loaning
a friend a CD. The 30-year-old originally thought of
creating the application so he could share music files
between his own computers. He plans to release his
free version of iCommune in a couple of weeks. - from

Cows
Pig Out on Junk Food - Farmers in Pennsylvania
have been feeding their cows with "'steer
party mix'— chips,
popcorn, pretzels and cheese curls." The cows line
up fast for this junk food, which is donated by nearby
plants. Some cattle even get chocolate balls and cereal.
Feeding people leftovers to cows is cheaper for the farmers
than buying corn. Lab results show that the food is nutritionally
sound, and experts say it does not affect the quality of
the beef. And who was it that asked "where's
the beef?" - from Yahoo

Pixelpalooza
2003 -
After a short pause to pay their respects to those
who were lost in the shuttle Columbia tragedy, The
Iconfactory officially
kicks off the 7th
installment of Pixelpalooza,
their annual icon design contest. This event is an
invitation to the Macintosh
icon design community to pull out all the stops and
send them your pixelated creations. From the Factory:
For
this years event we have combined the Illustrative
and 3D categories into a single category called Classic,
for those of you who still enjoy the challenge of working
on a 32x32 pixel canvas. The OS X category was by far
the most popular last year so it returns again this
year
unaltered. And new this year is the CandyBar category
which should prove to be very popular based on the
success of our icon switching software product.
Head
over to the Pixelpalooza pages for official contest
rules, guidelines and information on this year's
fantastic
prize packages. Warm up that mouse
button and start pixel-clicking!
