Holy Cow and the Farm Has Been Bought! - Scott Chitwood
of Rampant Mac
is closing up shop. Here's what Scott had to say:
Rampant Mac gave me a great ride for two and a half years
in the Mac GUI Community and it was made possible by the fun
people who came as visitors as well other awesome members of
the Community who supported my efforts. I'm also quite amazed
by the number of people out there who were impressed enough by
what I was doing that they in turn have become artists and members
of the Mac Community, it is the biggest compliment anyone could
dream of.
Rampant Mac was based on being free to all and that meant
for me too, I never wanted to go dot com. But things change and
what was once free now comes with a price and rather than pass
that cost along to my visitors I felt that the best option was
to shut down.
The purpose of this one remaining page is so that folks
connecting to Rampant Mac from other site links won't have to
stare at an error page.
As things do change I won't rule out the possibility that
Rampant Mac could someday return, weirder things have happened...
Once again, thanks to all and may your days be fun ;)
Scott
Though a sad day for the Mac community, we would like to express
a deep heart-rooted THANK YOU to Mr. Chitwood for the
infinite smiles generated by his endless talent and of course
from his larger-than-life heart. 8]
Pixelpalooza 2002 - If you're into pushing pixels,
then Pixelpalooza
is the place for you! The Iconfactory's
6th annual icon design contest is now underway. The Contest
is a fantastic opportunity for talented icon artists to create
original and compelling icons for the Macintosh
platform. This year's prizes are certainly worth mentioning:
Grand Prize Bundle - Apple iPod,
iGlove iPod case, Microsoft Office v.X, Fonthead CD-ROM, Choice
of 3 Font Diner sets, Vizspring Typeset, Rare "User"
t-shirt from Panic, Iconfactory t-shirt, and an Iconfactory lapel
pin.
Runner-Up Bundle - Microsoft
Office v.X, Aladdin Stuffit Deluxe, Panic Audion 2, Choice of
2 Font Diner sets, Typeset, Iconfactory t-shirt, Iconfactory
lapel pin
WOW! They will be accepting entries through Noon, e.s.t. on
Monday, April 1st, 2002. Get on over and SUBMIT!
Excellence in Art - Ed Allen and Alan Sherwood bring
you 10 excellent new additions to EA
Design. Take a moment and check out these fine new works.
Your eyes will thank you!
Old Dog, New Tricks - In a few months, Michael Rabe
will be burying the bone
and Doghouse
Online will be gone for good. Don't worry about the Doghouse's
themes and programs that you have grown to love. They will live
on in the new software company named "InstoSoft."
The new name is made up from the words "Insto"(Latin
for "To devote oneself to") and "Soft"(Software).
The Doghouse
will die after nearly 8 years of service, but its spirit will
continue with a fine new incarnation from the master himself!
Mac Music - An elementary teacher from Lafayette, California
has created an entire CD of songs that are inspired by and written
about his Mac. John Swerdan recorded the CD, titled "StartupSounds,"
using the school computer lab. He even used an iMac box as a
kick drum. Some of the songs on the three-year project include
"Startup/Hard Drive," "Quickdraw Bill," and
"Poor Sad Mac." Swerdan's CD is available for $15 at
his website. As of press time, a whopping zero copies have been
sold. - from Wired
Monkey Think Twice - Scientists have discovered a way
to get a monkey to think
a cursor across a computer screen. By implanting electrodes in
a monkey's brain while playing a simple video game, scientists
at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena were able
to detect electrical brain patterns that occurred as the monkey
maneuvered. They then trained the monkey to simply think about
the movements he wanted to make while playing the game and had
a computer move the mouse by reading the electrical patterns
from the monkey's brain. They were then able to follow the patterns
successfully 90 per cent of the time. Scientists would like to
see this type of research lead to paralyzed patients being able
to control robotic limbs or communications devices with their
thoughts. I would like to see this type of
science firmly planted in this Monkie's head for a more coherent
website! - from Yahoo
Is The Copyright Right? - Napster got a huge break
January 16 when judge Marilyn Hall Patel questioned whether the
record companies' copyrights extended to the digital distribution
of music. No other company has had the opportunity that Napster
now has to challenge the record companies on the ownership of
their copyrights. The problem is that Napster doesn't have any
more money or energy to fight. Still, judge Patel may encourage
them to do so. - from The
Register
Talk 'Till You're Flu In The Face - Thomas Chan of
Hong Kong's Chinese University has determined that the people
of Hong Kong are more likely to catch the flu virus because they
talk too much and too loud. "When you talk too much and
too loudly, you are traumatizing your throat," he says.
People who have their mouths open longer have a better chance
of the virus entering their throats. And people in Hong Kong
tend to shout because of the crowded population. Chan also adds
that "air pollution and a hectic social life" are contributors
to people catching the flu. Open mouth, insert
sock? - from Excite
Escotel Cells Veggies - The mobile phone company
Escotel offers a Cellular Rural Phone Service in which customers are
allowed to pay for their phone service via commodities, such
as milk, fruit and vegetables. Escotel offers this service mainly
as a way for people to keep in touch with their loved ones in
the Gulf. For example, "A kilo of cauliflowers will pay
for a one-minute call from Uttar Pradesh to New Delhi."
Once the phone operator receives the goods, it is up to him or
her to sell the goods and pay the phone company in cash at the
end of every month. - from Ananova
Lunchtime Crime - Raymond Jastrzab of Johnstown, Pa.
has been fired for bringing to work brownies that contained laxatives!
Jastrzab worked at OMG Americas and said that he "cooked
up" the brownies for his co-workers because they kept eating
his lunches. John R. Anthony Sr.., one of the co-workers to have
a "run-in" with the laxative-laced treats, is in the
process of suing Jastrzab due to the incident, which happened
on Jan. 27, 2000. - from CNEWS

Have you Heard?
TechTool 3.0.6 - In mid-January, an e-mail received
from Micromat Inc. said:
"TechTool Pro 3.0.6 will be compatible with OS 9.2.2
on down to 7.5.5. We expect the new version to be available around
the end of January."
At press time, the new update was currently unavailable. We
will let you know as soon as we confirm the release of the latest
available version of TechTool Pro.
Mac OSX 10.1.3 - Latest word on OSX 10.1.3 is that
it is very stable and quite possibly right around the corner!

EXCUSE ME! (Part II)
Excuse notes from parents (with their original spelling)
collected by schools from all over the country:
Please excuse Pedro from being absent yesterday. He had (diahre)
(dyrea) (direathe) the runs. [words in ()'s were crossed out.]
Please excuse Burma, she has been sick and under the doctor.
Irving was absent yesterday because he missed his bust.
Please excuse Jimmy for being. It was his father's fault.
I kept Billie home because she had to go Christmas shopping
because I
don't know what size she wears.
Please excuse Jennifer for missing school yesterday. We forgot
to get the Sunday paper off the porch, and when we found it Monday,
we thought it was Sunday.
Sally won't be in school a week from Friday. We have to attend
her funeral.
ONLINE ADDICTION (Part III)
You know you've been online too long when:
You are doing things more and more that you swore you would
never do when you first got online.
You sign on & immediately get 10 IMs from people who have
you on their buddy list.
You have a map on the wall with LOTS of red thumbtacks to
mark where people are you have met.
You look at an annoying person off-line & wish you had
your ignore button handy.
You bring a bag lunch and a cooler to the computer.
You go thru "withdrawal" if you are away from the computer
for more than a few hours.
Your buddy list has over 100 people on it.
You wake up in the morning and the first thing you do is get
online before you have your first cup of coffee.
You have to inject no-doze into your butt to keep it awake.
You have your computer set so it goes directly into AOL's
welcome screen.
You wait 6 hours online for a certain "special"
person to come home from work.
You don't know where the time has gone.
You end sentences with 3 (or more) periods while writing letters
by hand.
Your relationship online has gone farther than any real one
you have had.
You get up at 2 am to go to the bathroom but turn on the computer
instead..
OH, STOP IT!
Two blonde guys are driving a car on a very hilly road. They
get to the top of a very high, steep hill and they start going
down it very fast. The guy driving says "Oh no! The brakes
don't work!" The passenger calmly replied "Don't worry,
There's a Stop sign at the end of this hill."

Holy Cow Monkies |
WOW!
It is so hard to believe that Rampant Mac is closing up shop.
I cannot not express enough how much of a positive influence
Scott and his tremendous talent has had on the Mac Community.
This Monkie is one that was sooo inspired by Scott's work that
I had to try my dabble at the 3-D eye candy, though not near
as accomplished as the Rampant Mac himself! And quite honestly,
Rampant Mac gave this Monkie my start and was the whole reason
MacMonkies came to be.
Specifically, a classic 3-D work by Scott titled "Get Happy"
put the grin behind the madness at MacMonkies.
Yes. It is difficult to see Rampant
Mac go. However, many fond smirks and smiles will outshine the
sniffies thanks to one very Dool Cude (not to mention the very
ape chimp flick I was Banana blessed with one particular day
when a certain somebody became "king").
Ain't it good to be King -- if just
for a day?!
=)
