GUI News! - You just can't keep up with that good GUI stuff! Just as IHeartNY: Xicons put out Don't Eat the Daisies, now a new set appears titled Swallows (is that a hint of what not to do if you did eat the daisies?).

Also in the area of icons is Happicon! Rene has really made the place sparkle with a new look and a new set of icons titled Windows SE.

Check 'em Out!

Sticky Brain! - As you probably have already heard, Sticky Brain 2 is now available. But there is even more cool news. If you were one who grabbed one of the free registrations we mentioned last week, you can upgrade to the latest version without having to pay the full price. We contacted Chronos Software and they said:

Those who received version 1 of StickyBrain and wish to upgrade to
version 2 will need to pay the upgrade price.

This saves you 15 bucks! And you're still here? Get going!

At The Top

LOST: MAC'S MILK! - Have you seen this man? Not the man in the picture, but the picture itself - Got Mac? Got Mac?One of MacMonkies loyal readers (actually, our Software Junkie) is in search of (more like obsessing over) this classic Mac pic of Steve Jobs and his milk mustache titled "Got Mac?" The closest we have come to finding it is an inactive link at The Apple Collection.

If you have any information regarding this man...I mean the pic "Got Mac?" (or how to get the Monkie Junkie off my back), or if you have a copy of the pic, please contact me at:

Dr.Monk@macmonkies.com

Your help in finding a copy of "Got Mac?" would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. All joking aside, Kara would be forever grateful if you could help find the pic!

Looky!

MonkieNews! - Phew! Hopefully taking care of the Milk Man thing will give me a couple of minutes rest! Then I can get back to spiffing up the site and handling the other additions soon to come at MacMonkies. What might those additions be? Let's take a look at some Monkie News and find out!

  • Monkie Facelift! - As you can see, we have continued to scrub up and touch up the place here and there. We will continue to go through the Ch, ch, ch, Chimp Changes for a bit yet. I guess that's a bit like Monkie evolution? Anyway! If there is anything you would like to suggest or something you see that is out of place, let us know by heading over to the Comment Page or dropping us a Note!

  • In Addition - Other additions coming to MacMonkies are things such as:

The Icon Department, Barefoot Monkies Beta News Section, Multi-Language Translation for MacMonkies, and much more!

Stay tuned as we plop out the additional stuff!!

  • In the Gallery! - We continue to be honored with desktop work from such artists as Neil Roberts and Andy Moraitis of Ethereal Creations! We also have the usual contributions from the doctor of Monkeyin' around, Dr. Monk! Let's dive in!

Desktop Dining - Andy Moraitis starts out our Desktop Department with an ultra fine piece titled Passion and Warfare!

On the the opposite end of Andy's fine cuisine are a couple pieces of simplicity by Dr. Monk titled Simple Blue and splooch. splooch? That's what you get when you have black splotches all over your blue canvas. Now was that so hard to figure?

3-D Desserts! - Ahhh!! Starting off your 3-D delight is a scrumptious piece from Neil Roberts titled Sunset Strip. Sit back and enjoy the sun!

Also from Neil is a really cool piece to meditate upon called zen2a.

And finally, from the Monkie of Funk (or is that Dr. Monk and the Monkie Bunch), are a couple of new 3-D works titled Mountain High and Sticky. Check 'em out!

Thanks Guys!
Fantastic Work!

  • Barefoot Beta - There will be new sounds added to our Barefoot Monkies Beta Testing Site very soon. We will let you know as soon as they are up!

News On The Net...

Singin' the Bluetooth -Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, came through on his word with the Bluetooth USB Adapterrelease of Bluetooth Software this month. The software allows for wireless communication between devices such as cell phones, printers and, of course, computers. It allows communication in speeds up to 1 MB within thirty feet. Along with the software, Apple has also released a Bluetooth USB adapter. These were released April 1, 2002, and the software will run on Mac OS X 10.1.3 or later. - from MacCentral

Fool's Rule - April Fools' Day came about because some ancient cultures used to celebrate New Year's Day on April first. In 1582, when Pope Gregory XIII changed New Year's Day to January first, some of the people in France either didn't know about the change or didn't accept it, and they continued to celebrate New Year's Day on April first. As a result, many people teased them and tried to play tricks on them and get them to believe in things that weren't real. April Fools' Day had its first widespread celebration by the English in the eighteenth century. - from Information Please

The Search Is On! - A souped-up search engine called Teoma is out that will be in Start Your Search Engines!direct competition with Google. According to Apostolos Gerasoulis, who founded Teoma in 1999, "Google has reached its maturity." Gerasoulis is a mathematics professor at Rutgers University who has had his sights set on outdoing Google for quite some time. Craig Silverstein, Google's director of technology, believes that the Google search engine will remain the quickest and most useful even though Teoma may be "interesting." Gentlemen, start your search engines! - from Excite

Innovation Sensation - Apple has been listed as the number one innovator in the category of computer/office equipment of Fortune's "America's most admired companies." Other significant ratings for Apple included second in quality of products/services and third in use of corporate assets. IBM and Dell got the highest rankings overall in this category, but Apple came in third above such companies as Hewlett Packard, Gateway and Compaq. CLICK HERE to view Apple's ratings. - from MacCentral and Fortune

The Big Ouch - StatMarket.com has reported that Netscape has lost 40 percent of their Stockshare of the Web browser market in the past seven months. Netscape share has fallen since the release of Internet Explorer 6, which currently has 30 percent of Internet users. Critics of Netscape say that they don't have much to offer users, but there are two things that may boost Netscape's share in the future. First, AOL may switch to Netscape. Second, depending on the outcome of the antitrust case against Microsoft, companies may be allowed to place Netscape on PCs. - from MacUser

Too Many Monkies! - Monkey see, monkey do! The population of monkeys in Hong Kong is growing by 10 percent per year and the monkeys are becoming a UH!nuisance. They are aggressively snatching food from people in public places. The government, in addition to planting food dumps for the monkeys outside the city, is injecting the monkeys with "monkey birth control." The injection makes male monkeys sterile and makes female monkeys infertile for up to five years (eeeyikes). This is a trial program where the monkeys are captured, injected and released. If this method proves to be successful the government will turn it into a full scale program. Animal activists are pleased with this method of monkey control. Now wait just a cotton pickin' minute here! - from Excite

Have you Heard?

Don't Say A Word! - Sources are saying that one of the problems with the production of the new iMacs has been a firmware update. Instructions on installing the update are only found on the restricted section of Apple's Knowledge Base online support, and are only available to internal staff members and official support providers. Apple has no comment on the firmware update. One other thing that has slowed down production of the new iMacs is that the building of the arm which attaches the monitor to the base has been more timely than Apple expected. Both of these problems have been resolved with the current iMacs and production should now speed up a bit.

Editor's Note: Though Apple may have solved the "mechanical" problems, they still continue to suffer from admitting when they are at fault. It is ironic that the very first iMac out of the shoot also had the exact same problem. It was with personal experience that found that Apple Tech Support was not even aware of the needed firmware update on the original iMac until they consulted with a Senior Technician. Though I would never ditch my Mac, I find it rather disheartening that some things with Apple never change. - BJW

Useless Mac Tip #3 - Sometimes you just can't get your Mac to shut-up (that's shut down if you are not already frustrated). Sometimes you might see that ugly System Error bomb and want to restart your system. Sometimes you won't even get that and still nothing moves. Other times, your system is running fine but the strangest thing happens: It just won't shut down - PERIOD!

Well, there are better ways than pitching the hammer at it or literally pulling the plug. Both situations can cause permanent damage to your Mac. So let's look at the alternative methods.

To Restart - If you have tried every key combination known to man and ape to restart your Mac with no success, you can always press the left button below the power button on the BW G3's and the Graphite G4's. This should provide an instant restart.

On the older Beige G3 towers, that little green light is not just to let you know it's on. If you press it while froze up, it will shut down the machine so you can start it up once again.

To Shut Down - Most of the time, if you press the power button on the newer G3 and G4 towers, it simply puts the machine to sleep. However, if you have just a teeny bit more patience, hold that same button down for 10 - 15 seconds and VIOLA! Your machine is now off.

For the older Beige G3 towers, there's that little green light again.

Remember, if you are continually having problems with your Mac in these areas, contact Apple Tech Support (800-275-2273) or an authorized Apple Service Provider ASAP!

Software News - MacCentral reports that those of you who have registered copies of GoMac or Action GoMac can purchase Max Menus for a discounted price! This deal is only good through April 15. CLICK HERE for more details!

SIGNS YOU HAVE ENTERED THE 21ST CENTURY (Part I)

You just tried to enter your password on the microwave.

You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of three.

You call your son's beeper to let him know it's time to eat. He e-mails you back from his bedroom, "What's for dinner?"

Your daughter sells Girl Scout Cookies via her web site.

You chat several times a day with a stranger from South Africa, but you haven't spoken with your next door neighbor this year.

You check the ingredients on a can of chicken noodle soup to see if it contains Echinacea.

Your grandmother asks you to send her a JPEG file of your newborn so she can create a screen saver.

You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home.

Every commercial on television has a web-site address at the bottom of the screen.

You buy a computer and 6 months later it is out of date and now sells for half the price you paid.

 Editor's Notes

Monkie Pooped!

Things just keep picking up! I have had to let a couple of sections slide for a short time to keep the main Bananas rolling. My apologies if any of you missed this section. It was only meant for me to rant and vent a bit in a healthy fashion and an opportunity to be more personal with the readers of MacMonkies. Quoting Madonna - Oh please, SLAP me for that one! - This is just a place to "Express Yourself." Myself in this case and you still let me get away without a punch in the nose (No, I am not a big Madonna fan - sorry ladies).

Anyhoo, with a bit more organization, things should be back to normal (whatever that is) soon.

Have a SPLENDID day!
