News On The Net...
iMac Versus Profile 4 - In another 5 days, Gateway will present the Profile
4, an all-in-one computer designed to compete with
Apple's iMac. There will be four models available to consumers
and two models available to businesses. The top model has a 2.66GHz
Pentium 4 processor, 17-inch flat-panel monitor, 512MB of double-data
rate (DDR) SDRAM, 120GB hard drive, CD-RW/DVD combo drive, USB
2.0 and Windows XP Home, and sells for $1,999. The Profile 4's
prices are comparable with Apple's iMac, but none of them contain
DVD recording drives. -
from CNet
TMI: The Truth Of The Lie - Humberto Perez got more than
he bargained for by participating in a radio show titled "What
is Your Biggest Lie?" On the show, he told all about how
he had a friend steal his pickup truck, filed it as stolen, and
got a new truck as well as cash from his insurance company. Even
though he used the fake name of "John," the FBI was
able to track him down quickly through the record of stolen vehicles
because he had been specific as to the time and place of the
event. Perez now faces up to five years in prison for mail fraud
because he filed a false claim. Guess
no one ever said that crooks were all that smart. - from Excite
Toilet Treasures - An "In the Toilet" art exhibit
was held at The How Original gallery in Laguna Beach recently.
Gallery owner Loretta Alvarado got the idea of beautifully hand-painted
toilets after eying an old toilet that had been taken out of
her house and was sitting on her porch. Kimberly-Clark Professional,
toilet paper maker, was so moved by the art that they sent a
year's supply of toilet tissue to the museum. - from Yahoo
Apple Online Auction - DoveBid will be holding an online
auction of Apple products at DoveBid.com.
The auction will begin at 9 am Pacific time on August 30, 2002,
and will last until approximately 1 pm of the same day. Items
to be auctioned include "new and reconditioned Apple computers,
notebooks, and peripherals." DoveBid is a company that specializes
in holding auctions, and certain rules and restrictions will
apply. - from MacCentral
Postal Package Delivered Post Date - Kenneth F. Perkins
got a package last week that was postmarked Dec. 13, 1945. It was found
by construction workers in a courthouse that used to house a
post office. The package was delivered to a now 79-year-old Perkins.
It was sent from a woman he had met while serving in the navy
and contained "after-shave lotion, talc and hair dressing."
Perkins speculates that the woman stopped writing to him because
he didn't send "a card thanking her for the gift." I have heard of being post dated, but
this is ridiculous! - from Yahoo

Have you Heard?
Something's Coming From The Iconfactory - The fab pixelators from The
Iconfactory are apparently working on something of considerable
coolness for your OSX x-perience! According to the Factory, they've
got a "super-secret project in the works that will be a
welcome addition to any OS X Dock." Hmmm! Could this be
a practical improvement, a graphical one, or both?! The use of
"super-secret" seems to imply that them lips is sealed
until the cat climbs outta the bag! However, it does sound as
though the word could be out very soon. Keep them Bananas peeled
and we'll keep ya posted!
Apple iPhone In The Works? - The folks at MacCentral
mention the possibility of Apple breaking into the cell phone
business with a device that New
York Times writer John Markoff calls an iPhone. Though all
evidence thus far is circumstantial, it is rather interesting
to note how "Jobs showed off Mac OS X 10.2's ability to
synchronize data with a Sony/Ericsson cell phone that can manage
calendar and contact information using a forthcoming technology
called iSync."
Also of curiosity is the future of the iPod
and it's possible connected roll with a unit such as an iPhone.
Though Jobs seems to push away the idea of an Apple branded PDA,
our curious Monkie can't help but wonder of perhaps a full blown
OS running on the iPod. Time will tell!

SINGIN' THE SAME OLD TUNE
A lounge singer brags before his audience
in a booming, bellowing voice, "Two years ago I insured
my voice with Lloyds of London for $750,000."
There is a hushed and awed silence in the
crowded room. Suddenly, from the back of the room, the quiet,
nasal voice of an elderly woman is heard, "So what did you
do with the money?"
CHINESE TOM
What do you get if you cross an alley cat
with a chinese cat?
A Peking Tom.
HOKEY POKEY
The man who wrote the song "Hokey Pokey"
died. What was really horrible is that they had trouble keeping
the body in the casket. They'd put his left leg in and...well,
you know the rest.
WINDOWS ON MAC
The MacIntosh Windows emulator: When fired
up, begins to put up a zippy MacIntosh screen, stops halfway
down the screen to declare, "Oops? Sorry. You wanted 1950's
technology." It then goes into command line mode. The supposed
unused ROM hook in the Mac that would have caused a monkey to
dance across the screen ONCE upon the 7698th (or whatever) boot
of the machine. Insects crawling around the screen.
STRUNG UP LIGHT BULB
How many guitarists does it take to change
a light bulb?
Twenty. One to change the bulb and nineteen
to say, "Not bad, but I could've done better."
AS OLD AS YOU FEEL
A woman walked up to a little old man rocking
in a chair on his porch. "I couldn't help noticing how happy
you look," she said. "What's your secret for a long
happy life?"
"I smoke three packs of cigarettes
a day," he said. "I also drink a case of whiskey a
week, eat fatty foods, and never exercise."
"That's amazing," said the woman,
"how old are you?"
"Twenty-six," he said.
THE REAL DIFFERENCE

Eventually a Savings Bond will mature and

LONELY PSYCOLOGY
A new teacher is trying to make use of her
Psychology courses. She starts her class by saying, "Everyone
who thinks you're stupid, stand up." After a few seconds,
little Johnny stood up. The teacher said, "Do you think
you're stupid, Johnny?" "No, ma'am," he says,
"but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself."
