America Offline? - If you have America Online 5.0 for
Mac and use your TCP/IP to connect via AT&T Broadband, you
may have found no access using the AOL software. MacMonkies
spoke with AOL's tech support, and they claim this problem is
due to AT&T's take over after the outage from the Excite@Home's
bankruptcy. However, depending on who you speak with at
AOL, you may get conflicting reports. One thing is for certain:
AOL gave us a temporary fix till the problems are taken care
of:
Note: Before continuing, if you have any reservations
about the following fix, please call AOL Mac Tech Support at
1-888-265-8007. Though this is a relatively quick and painless
procedure, MacMonkies does not accept any responsibility
for any problems you might incur due to this instruction. Also,
read all the instructions before proceeding.
- 1st, we strongly recommend you make a duplicate copy of your
America Online prefs stored in your Preferences folder and put
them in a safe place outside your System folder.
- 2nd, be sure you write down ALL of your settings in
the "Setup" section of your "Sign On" screen.
- 3rd, remove the AOL Link Enhanced and AOL Link Scanner from
your Extensions folder and put them also in a safe place (this
will save you from having to use the AOL installer to reinstall
them, if you choose).
- Finally, find your AOL 5.0 Install CD. Open it up and locate
the AOL 4.0 installer (this should be in America Online Client /United
States of America /4.0/Install AOL 4.0. Install AOL 4.0
and restart. Start AOL 4.0 (if it does not do so automatically).
Reconfigure your settings using "Automatic" or, if
you are confident and are well versed with the software, choose
"Expert."
There are some disadvantages to using the old software. For
instance, you may not have access to all 5.0 features (such as
access to all 7 screen names) and the old software is buggy.
Again, proceed at your own risk. If you have questions, or would
rather have live tech support, call AOL Mac Tech Support at 1-888-265-8007.
We will post more info as we receive it.

a "biological computer" that fits inside a test tube.
It is made up of a DNA molecule solution and can perform billions
of operations per second. These test tube computers are programmable,
and reportedly billions of them can fit into one drop of water.
But they are a far cry from any of the modern-day computers.

over by the cops recently because he was driving on the wrong
side of the road with his headlights off. When asked why he was
driving that way, Peter Thomas Smith told police that he was
trying to spot black holes in the sky and he couldn't see them
with his headlights on. The man was fined and is not permitted

Bear With Me - Troy Hurtubise, a Nobel-prize winning
engineer, will test out his latest invention on December 9, 2001.
He has created a bear-proof suit made of "plastic, rubber,
chainmail, galvanised steel, titanium - and thousands of meters
of duct tape." The suit has taken 15 years and $100,000
to develop. Troy will test the suit out by letting a bear attack
him. He has already survived "two strikes with a 136-kilogramme
tree trunk, 18 collisions with a 3-tonne truck at 50 kilometers
an hour, and numerous strikes by arrows, bullets, axes and baseball
bats." "I've never had a bruise," he says. Troy
is reportedly excited as well as anxious. "This is a bear,"
he says. "Real teeth, real claws, real power." - from NewScientist
Silent Mourning - Residents of Liverpool, England mourned
the death of Beatle George Harrison Monday. 2,000 people gathered
at St. George's Hall with candles and memorabilia to pay their

together. Authorities confirmed that Harrison's ashes would be
scattered by the Gangus River in India. -

Let's Get Small - The 2001 International Electron Devices
Meeting will be held this week in Washington DC. The purpose
of the meeting is for engineers to get together to show how small
their stuff can be. Three hopefuls for the gathering include
an AMD transistor with a speed of 3.3 terahertz, an Intel terahertz
transistor and an IBM 2 terahertz transistor. The IBM transistor
also boasts of a "double-gate," which is like a gate
that is so small that electricity seeps through, allowing transistors
to switch on and off quickly." - from

Panoramic Spew! - Open to all thrill-seekers is the
world's fastest Roller coaster. The Dodonpa at Fujikyu Highland
in Japan is scheduled to debut this month. This new roller coaster
goes with the gravity of 3.5, while roller coasters normally
go with the gravity of two. This makes the Dodonpa the fastest
roller coaster yet. Said one thrilled rider of the new roller
coaster, which overlooks Mt Fuji, "The acceleration was
amazing. It was very scary. But I want to go back on it again."

Have you Heard?
2 Steps Forward, 1 Step Back - Apple
has pushed back the release date of Mac OS X 10.2 to a date that
has not yet been announced. It was anticipated that the10.2 upgrade
would show up at the January Macworld Expo in San Francisco.
Reports say that Apple is concerned over the quality control
of recent updates, however, and will probably schedule the release
of Mac OS X 10.2 so it will coincide with the timing of education
purchases of Apple products (early Summer).
Differing Opinions - There
seem to be differing opinions as to whether or not the new G5
will show up at the January Macworld Expo in San Francisco. The
Register reports that "according to our source, Apple
CEO Steve Jobs will take to the stage at Macworld Expo San Francisco
and unveil desktop Power Mac G5s running at 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6GHz.
They will be based on a processor code named G5." On the
flip side, Think
Secret reports that "Apple will not release a Power
Mac in January based on the G5 microprocessor. The new pro desktops,
believed to ship at Macworld Expo/San Francisco next month, will
reportedly ship with a PowerPC 7460 G4 chip, code-named Apollo."
While Mac fans eagerly await the Expo, only time will tell what
Apple decides to unveil.
Speculation Confirmation - There has been much speculation
that Apple's new iPod was designed to work with a remote control
device. iPoding
reports that this speculation has now been confirmed. The iPod
was indeed made to work with a remote control device. A remote
control does not ship with the iPod, however. So now people are
speculating as to why the iPod is not being shipped with a remote
control device.

Tips for iTunes - Did you know that you can have different
EQ settings for each individual song in your iTunes Song Library?
Yes-sir-ree Bob!! It's simple. Just open up iTunes, go to Edit
in the Menu Bar and select "View Options" (Command
J). Then check "Equalizer" in the "Show Columns"
section (you may want to deselect one or two of the other options
so your iTunes window isn't too big). Then click OK and...Ta

- You check out their address, and it's a phone booth containing
a Compaq portable and an acoustic coupler.
- Their chief technical officer lives in a 10-foot-by-7-foot
shack in the woods.
- Their proud boast: "We've been on the Internet since
it was CB radio."
- Their promo materials use the words "information"
and "superhighway" in the same sentence.
- You order an SLIP/PPP connection, e-mail, and 2MB of server
space for your personal Web site, and the voice on the other
end of the phone asks, "Would you like fries with that?"

Q: What do you have when 100 lawyers are buried up to their

A: Not enough sand.
COMPUTER GENDER
Women claim that computers should be referred to in the masculine
gender because:
- In order to get their attention, you have to turn them on.
- They have a lot of data, but are still clueless.
- They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the
time they are the problem.
- As soon as you commit to one, you realize that, if you had
waited a little longer you could have had a better model.
Men concluded that computers should be referred to in the
feminine gender because:
- No one but the Creator understands their internal logic.
- The native language they use to communicate with other computers
is incomprehensible to everyone else.
- Even your smallest mistakes are stored in long-term memory
for retrieval.
- As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself
spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.

Ye Old Dial-Up |
Gads! Talk about SLOW!!
Until our local AT&T service gets things figured out,
ye old Monkie Bunch has had to resort to the old dial-up as a
back-up. Fortunately, we have a back-up. Needless to say,
it is very slow compared to the broadband connection we were
accustomed to. So, we were a bit tardy on our update. A couple
of sections will experience a small delay due to the circumstances.
All apologies! We will post updates as soon as possible and will
certainly find a way to make it up to all of you! Thanks for
bearing (monkeying) with us!
