Kudos for Apple - Amidst an economic slow-down and
a decrease in sales in the entire computer industry, Apple Computer
seems to be faring well inspite of all the little black clouds.
Several sources are reporting good things about Apple:
- MacUser
reports that in a survey by Which? Magazine, Apple was rated
top in computer reliability and after-sales support by by nearly
14,000 participants!
- Business
Week ranks Apple 49th in their annual survey of the world's
most valuable brands.
- Several sources are reporting that Apple was so dedicated
in securing exhibitor attendance that they offered to pay for
stand space and expenses for a number of major developers including
Macromedia and Adobe.
- Other World
Computing informs us that despite poor exhibitor attendance
at the recent Macworld Expo, visitor attendance was up around
14%. MacUser reports an increase in visitor attendance
of only 5%. Despite this, OWC adds that "the PC Expo
that took place about 2 weeks prior in the same location was
only a shadow of its former self and couldn't hold a candle to
the size and turnout of the MacWorld show."
- CNET
recently graded Apple and other leading computer manufacturers
on tech support. Apple scored well overall. See the report card
HERE.
- Business
Week also sang praises to the up and coming 10.1 update for
OSX.
Despite the occasional black cloud that tends to pester just
about everyone, Apple continues to find their silver lining.
Now how about them apples!
No Alternative for Microsoft - Microsoft plans
to move forward inspite of attempts to block the release of Windows
XP. Though Microsoft has received a political pressure and legal
threats, the company has no alternative plans for XP in case
the attempted blocks are successful. The company has been sharply
criticized because the new operating system uses of more of its
own software than ever, making it even more difficult for other
software companies to compete. Earlier, Microsoft did rewrite
contracts with computer manufacturers allowing them to remove
Microsoft's browser icon from the desktop. However, the software
giant is now using harsh words toward AOL for making a deal with
Compaq to place AOL's icon on the desktop, thus "hiding"
features MSN features. And who is calling
the kettle black?

Site of the Week - We
are pleased to report that The Apple Collection has
selected MacMonkies as their Site of the Week! The Apple Collection
has literally thousands of desktop pictures for consumption and
was designed to be fun and to add a bit of color to your browsing.
Thank you from all of us at MacMonkies!
Student ID - College students recently discovered
personal information including their Social Security numbers
and home addresses on the internet. The information was discovered
on the search engine Google.com
and was available from April until June. The problem has been
corrected. - from Excite

Monkey Technology - For some, technology is
not something to monkey around with. Others, however, find it
the name of the game! A safari park in central Scotland was recently
bombarded with mysterious calls to their mobile phones. The mystery
caller? A chimpanzee! Apparently, an eleven-year-old chimp picked
the pocket of a staff member at the park and quickly figured
out how to use his new "hi-tech" toy. Chippy began
making prank phone calls the very next day. However, Chippy's
identity was quickly revealed when one worker heard the chimp's
shrieks at the other end of the phone. Now
that's what I call monkey business! -from Excite

Have you Heard?
IBM has researchers testing new technology in a fully
furnished living room, kitchen and garage. The "smart house"
is completely connected. Stoves and microwaves cook automatically
according to recipes downloaded from the internet; refrigerators
tell of its contents without opening the door; home owners could
even monitor the inside of their house from a secure website.
The reality of the project could happen in as little as two years.
Big Brother III?
The beta 2 of QuicKeys
X was released by CE Software.
The new beta offers several improvements compared to beta 1.
A fall release date is scheduled for the final release of QuicKeys
for Mac OS X .
Sources are reporting that Apple's in development application
iPhoto could indeed be the root of tensions between them and
Adobe. Why such a thorn for Adobe? Like iTunes, Apple intends
on giving it away, which would directly affect Adobe's own Elements.

God Complex
From all reports, it seems obvious that both Bill Gates
and Steve Jobs have a God Complex. It seems equally obvious
that they are fundamentally different types of persons. How can
these two statements be reconciled?
Perhaps Bill Gates' Complex was inspired by the all-powerful,
ever-present, and awesome attributes of God. He saw the quaking
of people in reaction to the casting of thunderbolts and works
of wonderment and decided that it looked like the ideal job description.
The R & D required to get Creation 1.0 up and running isn't
very clear in these stories but, since everyone clearly thought
that everything God did was, de facto, right, that shouldn't
be a problem.
Steve Jobs, on the other hand, is more of a Messiah. He
wants to lead people to wonderful things, saving them from themselves
and from pretenders to the Throne. The advantage to those who
know they are mere mortals is that a Messiah can live with the
idea of simply offering people a choice. Individuals can follow,
or not. The all-powerful God Complex needs to assume that every
one will (and will even want to) follow them--Which is probably
why Microsoft and the Department of Justice have been in the
news so much lately.

10 Things You Probably Didn't Know

it
starves to death.

- A crocodile cannot stick its tongue out.
(but make sure you're a long way away before you stop to stick
yours out at the crocodile)
- American Airlines saved $40,000 in 1987 by eliminating one
olive from each salad served in first-class.
(a penny saved)
- Americans on average eat 18 acres of pizza every day.
- An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain.
- Babies are born without knee caps. They don't appear until
the child reaches 2 to 6 years of age.
- Butterflies taste with their feet.
- Cat's urine glows under a black light.
(don't try to verify this)
- China has more English speakers than the United States.

Justifying Chocolate
Chocolate is a vegetable. How, you ask?
Chocolate is derived from cacao beans.
Bean = vegetable. Sugar is derived from either sugar CANE or
sugar BEETS. Both are plants, which places them in the vegetable
category.
Thus, chocolate is a vegetable.
To go one step further, chocolate candy bars also contain milk,
which is dairy.
So candy bars are a health food.
Chocolate covered raisins, cherries, orange slices and strawberries
all count as fruit, so eat as many as you want.
If you've got melted chocolate all over your hands, you're eating
it too slowly.
The problem: How to get 2 pounds of chocolate home from the store
in a hot car. The solution: Eat it in the parking lot.
Diet tip: Eat a chocolate bar before each meal. It'll take the
edge off your appetite, and you'll eat less.
If calories are an issue, store your chocolate on top of the
fridge. Calories are afraid of heights, and they will jump out
of the chocolate to protect themselves.
If I eat equal amounts of dark chocolate and white chocolate,
is
that a balanced diet? Don't they actually counteract each other?
Money talks. Chocolate sings. Beautifully.
Chocolate has many preservatives. Preservatives make you look
younger. Therefore, you need to eat more chocolate.

Banana Appeal! |
A strange thing happened on the way
to the Banana Market:
A whole lotta fun be goin' on! We were quick to learn
that some serious fun goes a long, long way! Just one smirk can
ignite a whole chain of MonkieBusiness! If you play your bananas
right, the fun never has to end. With that in mind, that is where
our commitment lies. The peels are sure to be down to slip us
up on occasion. But at MacMonkies, we will always try
to look at the lighter side of things.
Now, some of you are probably wondering,
"HEY! Where are the two new sections you've been tellin'
us about?" Hmmm. How do I get out of this one? Well,
no bones about it, I am behind schedule in these areas. All apologies!
I will sit down this week and evaluate the plan and announce
a deadline for the introduction of the Recommended Software
and the Audio sections soon to debut.
MacMonkies
is nearly a month old now and I can't begin to thank all of you
enough for giving us your support. Your contributions and ideas
have been and will continue to be greatly appreciated. If there
is ever anything you would like to see or have something you
would like to contribute, send us your ideas
or drop me a line!
Don't stop Monkeying around! It's
good for Banana Appeal!
