Mac-to-School! Arrrrgh! Don't know about your neck
of the woods, but here in the "sticks" it's almost
time for school to swing back into action. Grab yer paper, pencils,
and of course yer Apples and prepare to git learned (pronounced
LEARN - ed).
A lot of diversified information is breaking loose on the news
front, so some of this week's edition of Network News will be
scaled down into smaller sections.
- Apple Computer will be
opening its fifth retail store at Woodfield
Mall in Schaumburg Ill. near Chicago on Saturday, August
25. The store is the 1st of three planned for the Chicago area. - from the Chicago
Sun Times
- Servus Robots,
makers of a robotic floor cleaning system, was recently rescued
by the efforts of an Apple Power Book. Due to the dread of the
worm Code Red, the company's ISP went out for a time. The ISP
was something the company could not do without. So, a Power Book
G4 was connected by IPNetMonitor and IPNetRouter, then to 11
other computers and a dial up connection. The company was then
able to continue with business. - from MacCentral
- Though Apple's Cube had a short life in sales, it appears
its shelf life will go the distance. The computer was 'inducted'
into New York's Museum of Modern Art for its design collection.
Steve Jobs said Apple was "surprised and honored" by
the event. - from MacUser
- Hollywood attempts to slow movie piracy by putting the breaks
on internet theft. Five companies have announced that will they
will team up with technology that will combat the potential Napster-like
piracy by offering a pay-per-view service that would allow the
customer to download the movie for around four dollars and then
view it within 24 hours.Unfortunately, the system is not pirate
proof. For cryin' out loud!! It would take
at LEAST that long to download it for most! - from TechTv
MonkieNews
- The organ is grinding and stuff is happenin' at MacMonkies
lately! We want to keep the site fresh and ready to serve. We
are in continuous search for stuff to offer for consumption (or
at least a place to pile the banana peels). So, in the following
pile you will find a few things that have occurred or will very
soon (we think):
- The Gallery has been spiffed up
a bit
- A new Desktop page has been
added
- One new Desktop and two new
3-D pics have been added
- An informational page for AOL users
has been added
- The Icon Factory has been added to the Links
page
- 1 of 2 sections for the new GUI department has been
completed
And speaking of the GUI department, the offer still stands.
Offer? If you don't read the MonkieBarrel (Editor's Notes),

right hand side of the page.
Mac OS 9.2.1 Update - As we reported yesterday afternoon,
Mac OS 9.2.1 is now available for download! Get it HERE!
iMac Mobile - Out with the old, in with the WHAT?
Remember when the bookmoblie first came out (careful, you
might just reveal your age)? Sweetwater Union High School
District in Chula Vista, CA revved up their new Mobile Computer
Lab on wheels. This van contains 40 new iBooks, 10 mini-DV cameras,
and 10 digital still cameras. Now that's some
Apple cart! - from MacCentral
Hammer Time! - Peter Gabriel, former Genesis member
and successful solo artist, has jumped into the technology race
before the (sledge) hammer falls. His plan is to offer fans the
option to purchase songs from the record companies rather than
pirate them. They would receive 40 songs for around $7 U.S. dollars
Madd Catter - They say that cats are perhaps the cleanest
house pets one could own. However, there definitely comes a time
when the little critters need some help from a third party. MacMonkies
found this very instructional tutorial in the event that occasion
should come about. We have to send you to another site for the
educational experience (unfortunately), but the tutorial is definitely
worth the visit! CLICK
HERE
P.S. We apologize in advance for the pop-up
ads you will see (nothing rude or crude), but it is definitely
worth stopping by!

Have you Heard?
Mac OS 9.2.1 - We were going to report that Apple's
9.2.1 update was right around the corner, but it was earlier
than we thought! =)
Mac Expo - Steve Jobs has announced that there will
be no new hardware introduced at the MacExpo in Paris this September.
The Expo is to focus on the "super fast" version of
MacOS X - v 10.1. Some are still wondering, however, what Jobs
might pull out to make up for the lack of the new hardware introduction.
Code Warrior 7 - Code Warrior 7 is scheduled ship September
10. Pro 7 is a complete suite of tools allowing developers to
target Mac OS 8.6 - 9.x and Mac OS X. Get more info at Metroworks.

I THINK...
I think all right thinking people in this country are sick
and tired of being told that ordinary decent people are fed up
with the idea of being told they are sick and tired. Well I'm
certainly not I'm just sick and tired of being told that I am!
Well I meet a lot of people and I'm convinced that the vast
majority of the wrong thinking people are right! -

GREAT TRUTHS (That Adults Have Learned):
- Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional.
- Forget the health food. I need all the preservatives I can
get.
- When you fall down, you wonder what else you can do
while you're down there.
- You're getting old when you get the same sensation from a
rocking chair that you once got from a roller coaster.
- It's frustrating when you know all the answers, but nobody
bothers to ask you the questions.
- Time may be a great healer, but it's also a lousy beautician.
- With age comes wisdom, but sometimes age comes
alone.

PHEW!
You mean there's still some time and more to say? I can barely
breathe much less get any more words out of my mouth. Pant pant!
Gasp!
But none of it is in vain. I believe it was Duke Ellington that
said "I don't need inspiration, just give me a deadline!"
I believe the Duke was right. Deadlines tend to inspire inspiration!
Interesting twist. When I challenged myself with a deadline for
the new GUI section, things started to take shape. It is currently
1 minute after my deadline and I have yet to polish and upload,
but all is well! We will continue. The near future may bring
a week off for a breath and a chance to organize. But you will
be the first to know.
Well, as it was once said:
PHEW! Sierra!
