Up Front - from the Editor
I must admit...I am by no means a self-professed optimist!
To be honest, I lean a bit more toward the contrary. However,
in times like these I am reminded of why this site was started
in the first place. If I must quote myself (eeeyikes)"...that
even with the dark clouds overhead, there was still plenty to
smile about (even if it was just gas)." Well, I would
have to say that now, more than ever, we need to find
things to smile about even if it hurts. Believe you me, it has
been very difficult to find things on the lighter side of life
to report back to you. There is every reason for us to mourn
and experience fear. However...
That is exactly what them booger eatin' terrorists want! They
want to stop us in our tracks because of what we don't know.
Well, we are going to do our best at MacMonkies to continue
to roll with the show. We mean no disrespect to anyone. However,
as long as I have my flea repellent, this chimp will do his best
to continue! I hope you will do the same. So...
Let the Good Times Roll!
VIRUS ALERT! - A new worm named Nimda is out and about.
Apparently, the worm "appears to be much more of a potential
problem than the Code Red worm ever was." It targets Windows
servers and (this time) user PCs. - from MacFixIt
Macs A Rampant! - Rampant
Mac sports a spiffy new look! This is a major facelift with
new graphics all around and (3), count'em - THREE - new desktops
added to the galleries!
MonkieNews - Here is a quick rundown of the events
at MacMonkies:
We are pleased to feature the original desktop creations by
Mr. Todd Darland in the Gallery.
This very talented, ever-optimistic artist submits "Burst of
Life" and "OceanView." Todd is a master mind when
it comes to computer graphics and...oh...did I mention that he
is my brother? No WONDER he is so talented! =) Oh Yeah!
I have a new one too..."One
Way."
Mr. MonkieHead Wiles officially experienced his 5 Minutes
of Fame. He received his copy of Japan's MacLife Magazine
that featured "IceMountain"
on the included CD ROM. WooHoo! The Associate Editor of
MacLife first encountered "IceMountain"
at ResExcellence.com.
A big thanks goes out to the folks over at ResEx!
Last week we opened the new GUI Department
that features the Recommended Software
Area and the OSX
Boot Panel Section.
MacMonkies Assistant Editor -- Beanhead -- is
becoming quite a regular part of the our humble team. YAY, Bean!
Apples, Apples, and More Apples - Apple Computer continues
to roll out the barrel as another Apple store opened in Tampa
Florida. Originally scheduled for Friday, the opening was delayed
a day because of last week's tragic events. Despite the "dark
cloud," some 300 people waited in line for the store's opening.
Tadd Torborg gives a glimpse of the opening at http://www.torborg.com/applestore/.
The Shops of Saddle Creek in Germantown,
TN, are gearing up for yet another Apple Store opening come
Saturday, September 29, 2001. In other Apple News:
- Apple will be doing its part to help bring relief to the
families of the rescue workers who lost their lives in the attack
September 11th. An Apple spokesperson has confirmed that Apple
will be donating $1,000,000 to families and, this holiday season,
will donate an iBook to those families with children that were
victim to the events.
- Apple has called off its Apple Expo 2001 show in Paris. Steve
Jobs apologized to the users and developers, but stated that
"safety is our primary concern."
- On the brighter side, however, Apple Shares fared better
than most tech companies on the first day that the markets re-opened.
Alienated - Feeling a bit alienated about all of the
recent events? Want a different perspective rather than the general doom
and gloom outlook? Want to express yourself to the "powers
that be?" The following is a short list of places from Time.com
and AOL to look at a different point-of-view as well as how to
tell the "Big Wigs" how you feel if the urge is upon
you. Take a look:
- Attack Q&A - TIME.com
answers your frequently asked questions about the attack on the
World Trade Center
- Five Ways the Conventional Wisdom May Be Wrong - some
of the post-attack assumptions about war and peace from
TIME.com
- Is War Really the Right Word? - concern that the bar
may be set too high from Time.com
- Government Guide Express - Contact
the Authorities
Please bear in mind that the opinions of Time.com do not necessarily
reflect the opinion of MacMonkies. They are merely being
offered as a different perspective to the recent events.
Snakes, Sparrows and Frogs, Oh My! - Bi Fubin has requested
on behalf of Beijing farmers 5,000 snakes, 20,000 sparrows and
200,000 frogs to eat up the locusts that are eating up their
crops. Using the food chain as a natural source of elimination
would prevent the need for nasty pesticides. Apparently the amount
of frogs could easily be supplied by China's restaurants. - from Excite

Have you Heard?
Dig That Gig - Oh man! Could it be?! The latest
buzz is concerning the new G5 chip that is said to be exceeding
2GHz. However, models expected to ship toward the beginning of
next year would be more likely to include 800MHz, 1GHz, 1.2GHz,
1.4GHz and 1.6GHz models. It is said that the 2GHz parts are
not stable enough to ship. We'll be watching!
What's HOT! - QPS-Inc.
has announced the immediate availability of their new DVD Burner.
Mac compatibility is uncertain at this time. The website states
"This FireWire solution works only with IEEE-1394 equipped
PC computers." However, MacMonkies has contacted
QPS and is waiting response.

HIND SIGHT
Two men are approaching each other on a sidewalk. Both are
dragging their right foot as they walk.
As they meet, one man looks at the other knowingly, points
to his foot and says, "Vietnam, 1969."
The other points his thumb behind him and says, "Dog
doo, 20 feet back.
RUN, TURKEY RUN
An industrious turkey farmer was always experimenting with
breeding to perfect a better turkey. His family was fond of the
leg portion for dinner and there were never enough legs for everyone.
After many frustrating attempts, the farmer was relating the
results of his efforts to his friends at the general store.
"Well, I finally did it! I bred a turkey that has six
legs!"
They all asked the farmer how it tasted.
"Don't know," said the turkey farmer. "I can't
catch 'em!"

ADULT RESIGNATION NOTICE
I am hereby officially tendering my resignation as an adult.
I have decided I would like to accept the responsibilities of
an 8 year old again. I want to go to McDonald's and think that
it's a four star restaurant. I want to sail sticks across a fresh
mud puddle and make ripples with rocks. I want to think M&Ms
are better than money because you can eat them. I want to lie
under a big oak tree and run a lemonade stand with zero profit
on a hot summer's day. I want to return to a time when life was
simple. When all you knew were colors, multiplication tables,
and nursery rhymes, but that didn't bother you, because you didn't
know what you didn't know and you didn't care. All you knew was
to be happy because you were blissfully unaware of all the things
that should make you worried or upset. I want to think the world
is fair. That everyone is honest and good. I want to believe
that anything is possible. I want to be oblivious to the complexities
of life and be overly excited by the little things again. I want
to live simple again. I don't want my day to consist of computer
crashes, mountains of paperwork, depressing news, how to survive
more days in the month than there is money in the bank, doctor
bills, gossip, illness, and loss of loved ones. I want to believe
in the power of smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth, justice, peace,
dreams, the imagination, mankind, and making angels in the snow.
So....here's my checkbook and my car-keys, my credit card bills
and my 401K statements. I am officially resigning from adulthood.
And if you want to discuss this further, you'll have to catch
me
first, cause..."Tag! You're it."

Sock In Mouth? |
|
Have you ever noticed that the more
I say "Up Front," the less I say down here in the "appropriate"
place for the Editor to speak? That's because by the time I get
down here, I have fallen off my soap box! And that is a very
strong indication that I am dire need of a bath (go ahead and
figure that one out - I dare ya!)
Well, I certainly hope you take the
time to come down here and see what the notes are all about.
Cuz sometimes some important things go on down here. Like what?
Hmmm.
That I am not sure of (except for
my usual rambling). But...I can tell you this. As soon as I get
some minor details organized, there will be a special event announced
at MacMonkies. I did say last week that it would be a
week or two. I may have to extend that a TEENY bit. BUT! It will
be soon.
In other notes, the Macmonkies
team is coming together rather nicely. Again I thank Beanhead
for all the continued sweat and hard work.
Finally, let's all pull together as
a people...not forgetting our humble beginnings.
SEE YA!
