New GUI! - Ed Allen of EA design updates with several new desktop delights for your viewing pleasure! Check 'em out!

Network News

January 18, 2002

MonkieNews! - Arrrrrgh! Gads, what a week! The MacMonkies' main Mac got really sick this last weekend. The poor guy goes into the CPU hospital this next week for diagnosis. We sincerely apologize for the delays and thank you bunches for your patience!

So, as a result of all the chaos, this week's edition of MacMonkies will be slightly abbreviated. If there are any further delays, we will keep you posted. 'Nuff said. Let's get to the events!

  • New in the Gallery! - Once again we are proud to display the fine works of Ed Allen. This week's renderings from EA design include the 3-D master pieces Rising On Up and Precious Metal.

Also in the 3 dimensional gallery are two new renderings from the Main Monkie titled Far From Home and Flight.

  • The End is Near! - Within a week or two, we will be discontinuing the mirrored updates at our Topcities and Mac.com web space. Please make note of our new address at www.macmonkies.com and keep it handy!

  • This Note's for You! - The newest addition to the MacMonkies basket of goodies -- the MIDI section of our Music/Audio Department -- is doing rather well! If you haven't already, hurry on over and give 'em a listen!

Ethereal Creations! - 3-D wizard Andy Moraitis of Ethereal Creations has three new releases on tap for you as well as having the Site News Page updated with a few changes! Hurry over and get your grab of GUI!

Tru Hot! - The good folks at TruSoft announce the release of HotApp 1.1 for Mac OS 10. This release adds 2 new features:

  • Copy/paste dynamic information related to the current date

  • Key remapping, especially useful for PowerBook, iBook, iMac/G3 owners. Get access to forward delete, page up, page down, home, end with any key combination

Rampant Mac! - New OS X Icons have been added to the already awesome collection at Rampant Mac. The set is titled "Aquaricons II". It features eighteen icons that are chock full of textures and complex blending modes. Stop on over and have a look!

Bug Off! - Bug Off!The privacy protection on Internet Explorer 6 is able to be penetrated by a "feature" in Windows Media Player. By default , Windows Media Player creates by default a serial number that is able to be snatched up by websites. This could allow third parties to track a user online even if they have their cookies set against it. It is trackable because the number provided by the Windows Media Player is kept in the Windows Registry. The bug also affects older versions of Netscape. Big Brother is watching you! - from The Register

Mac MythConception - Apple has (at last) stepped up to bat to knock those myths about the Mac outta the ball park. Among the mythical mysteries are:

  • Myth 1: Everyone uses Windows.
  • Myth 2: Macs don't work with PCs.
  • Myth 3: The software I need isn't available for Macs.
  • Myth 4: Macs don't run Microsoft Office.
  • Myth 5: Windows has caught up with the Mac.

And the last one is a no brainer.

  • Myth 6: Macs are far easier to use than PCs. Guilty as charged.

- from Apple

Cybercourt Sue - The first cybercourt will soon be in session. It will allow companies to sue each other over the internet by allowing lawyers to "file their briefs online, argue their cases by teleconference, and present evidence via streaming video to judges who have been trained in tech arcana." The cybercourt is being set up in Michigan and was approved this week by the state's governor, John Engler. It is hoped that the cybercourt will save time as well as money. Best hope their ISP don't charge by the hour! - fromWired

A Fined Mess! - A senior executive of Nokia was charged a speeding fine of $103,600 last October. The fine was the highest recorded speeding fine in Finland. He was only going a mere 47 mph in a 31 mph zone, but in Finland, a person is fined based on their income. Since then, Nokia's share prices have fallen and the executive is appealing his fine due to his change in income. His appeal will be heard on May 15th. - from Excite

Have you Heard?

BTO Graphics - It looks as though Apple's faster new Power Macs may come with the build-to-order option of ATI graphics chips. The new iMac contains only Nvidia's GeForce MX graphics cards, but ATI has announced two new graphics cards this week: the Radeon 7000 MacEdition and the Radeon 8500 Mac Edition. It is suspected that these graphics cards may be offered with new Power Macs.

Techy Tools - MacMonkies has learned that Micromat's TechTools 3.06 is to be available around the end of January. The new version is to be compatible with OS 9.2.2 on down to 7.5.5.

VEGETABLE LOVE STORY

Do you CARROT all for me?
You are my CURRANT love.
My heart BEETS for you.
I'm MELON-CHOLY all the THYME when I don't see you.
With your TURNIP nose, your RADISH hair, and your CHERRY smile,
You're a real PEACH.
My CELERY many be tiny,
But WEED make such a swell PEAR,
If we CANTALOUPE, LETTUCE marry soon.
No SAGE would interfere.

A V8 Tale

YOU'VE GOT MAIL!

A blonde went outside to check her mailbox, and her neighbor kept an eye on her, she had no mail, so she went back inside her house. Two minutes later, the same blonde went outside for the 2nd time to check her mailbox, and still, she had no mail, and the neighbor was confused. One minute later, again the woman comes outside to check her mailbox for the 3rd time, and again, she had no mail. This time, her neighbor went up to her and said, "The Mailman won't be here for another 3 more hours, why do you keep on checking your mail?". The blonde said, "Oh, because my computer keeps on saying, "You've got mail."

ANSWERING MACHINE MESSAGE

Hello, you are talking to a machine. I am capable of receiving messages. My owners do not need siding, windows, or a hot tub, and their carpets are clean. They give to charity through their office and do not need their picture taken. If you're still with me, leave your name and number and they will get back to you.
