At The Top
Windows Users: Apple Wants YOU! - The switch is on. Apple's new advertising campaign
will begin focusing on winning over PC users, according to Apple
CEO Steve Jobs. They will feature live testimonies of real-life
converts who have switched over from PC to Mac. As one of the
converts says, "I deal with Windows all day. When I'm tired
of that, I come home to a Macintosh." Apple is also hoping
that the Apple stores will help PC users to make the switch,
as half of the store sales go to non-Mac users. The "Real
People" ads will begin airing on TV starting this week.
The ads can also be seen at Apple's Switch
page. - from CNet

News On The Net...
A Big Deal...Really - Governor Angus King of Maine has a mission to
get a computer
in the hands of every middle school student in the state. He
led a demonstration with twelve students as well as Apple CEO
Steve Jobs himself in Maine on Monday to present his case in
hopes to keep the $25 million iBook project going. King has saved
$10-$15 million by making a deal with Apple for the iBooks, and
says he does not intend to "walk away from it." If
King succeeds, the iBook will be part of the "largest educational
technology project in the history of the world." - from
MacCentral
Password Problems: Hackers Heaven - Norway's National
Center of Language and Culture is having trouble accessing important
documents stored on their computer. Why? The technician responsible
for the care of the documents did not reveal the password for
access before he died. As a result, the director of the center
has asked for hackers to try to crack the code to the password-protected
database. Since the problem began, some have decided to try "Dead
Man's Switch," a program designed to "avoid any postmortem
problems or embarrassment." Well,
that password seems safe to me.
- from Wired
Duck, Duck, Locust - Four thousand ducks are being
unleashed in Beijing, China
in order to eat up the surplus of locusts that are eating the
crops. There are already up to 5,000 locusts per square meter
in a town called Tianjin. Xiao Hongwei from the locust station
says that "ducks are the best way to get rid of locusts
because they have such a big appetite." The ducks will become
plump eating the locusts and can then be sold to restaurants.
Mmm, mmm, good. Just think of
all that protein. - from Excite
VeriSign On The Dotted Line - VeriSign Inc is still sending
direct mail to the customers of their competitors in an attempt
to win over new customers for themselves. A lawsuit was brought
against VeriSign by Bulkregister.com last month, and is being
followed by a lawsuit by Go Daddy this month. VeriSign has sent
out information that "encourages" customers to renew
domain names, but the intent is switch customers from current
hosts to VeriSign. Though accused of domain "slamming,"
VeriSign claims to be in compliance with court orders. We at MacMonkies have relieved such a
notice and will soon provide a copy for viewing. - from The
Register
Chimp Chase - Officials in Scotland Yard have had a bit
of a time catching up with
a very "special" thief. It seems that a chimpanzee
has stolen a cell phone as well as some stereo parts from an
apartment. Police received two burglary reports in Hackney and
the second victim said he saw a monkey leaving after the burglary.
"I saw this hairy black chimpanzee coming through the window,"
he said. "I couldn't believe what I was seeing." A
spokesperson for the Scotland Yard said, "We have our greatest
minds on this one." Apparently
they can't believe what they are seeing either! - from Ananova
Have you Heard?
Later Than Sooner Than Later - The newest major update to the Mac version of
Microsoft's Internet Explorer is expected to be dubbed Version
6, rather than the previously anticipated Version 5.5. However,
unlike previous expectations, the new update is expected later
than the "sooner" anticipated arrival! Confusing? You
and I both!
Newer Tech Is Back
- As many have heard, Newer
Technology, a company that has brought third-party processor
upgrades to the Mac, is back in business. In addition, Other
World Computing (OWC) is teaming up with Newer Tech to be
the exclusive source for Newer's products. From OWC:
Newer Tech has seen the light of day
again and Other World Computing has engaged them to be the EXCLUSIVE
world wide source for all of their products. The first product
to be offered looks to be a G4/500MHz upgrade, the first of its
kind, for the PowerBook G3 Pismo. Several more products from
their existing line should also begin to ship this month. NewerTech
made the best upgrades around and it couldn't please me more
have a part in making them available again.
Keep your eyes peeled at both the Newer
Technology site and OWC
for further developments. We'll keep ya posted!

oh so carefully enunciated each word of The Lord's Prayer, right
up to the end of the prayer when she said,"Lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us some E-mail. Amen."
TAXING SMILE
Smith: I

Windows: Just another pane in the glass.
COMPUTERS AND LIGHT BULBS
Q: How many Computer Scientists does it
take to screw in a light bulb?
A: None, that's a hardware problem.
RUN FOR YOUR WIFE
A man placed an ad in the classifieds: "Wife
wanted." The next day he received a hundred letters. They
all said the same: "You can have mine."
SEX EDUCATION
A unit in sex education was about to begin,
and each student had to bring in a permission slip in order to
take it. A boy handed in his slip and explained to the teacher,
"My mom says I can take the course as long as there's no
homework."

Coke Trivia
The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric
acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days.
Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major
contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.
To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate)
the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material place cards
reserved for highly corrosive materials.
The distributors of coke have been using
it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!
