Software Update - St.
Clair Software has updated Default
Folder X, fixing a few problems in the System Preferences
pane in and adding French-language support for our French-speaking
users. The update is free to registered users. More details can
be found here
or can be downloaded here.
The Rest of the Mac Web Story - The results are in
for Low End Mac's 3rd Rest of the Mac
Web Survey. A big congratulations go out to everyone at The Iconfactory for placing
#1! They certainly deserve the top notch position!
MacMonkies received an overall rank of 31 of 50 sites.
I believe we were 39 in the last survey. Our "respectability"
rating came out a little above average with a 3.185 out of 5
possible points - 1 being poor and 5 being excellent.
Though the "Best of" and "Rest of" surveys
are "a bit of a popularity contest," they present site
owners and webmasters additional tools to evaluate their performance.
We certainly appreciate your support and are always open to your
input. Feel free to send us your feedback by heading over to
our Comment
Page or simply drop us a line at:

Thought for the Day - Change is inevitable - except
from vending machines.

At The Top
News Flash! Pack
Your Bags! - Yup! That's right. You better start packing.
An asteroid may be hitting the Earth - in about 900 years!
And even at that, the odds are about 1 in 300, scientists report.
The due date? March 16, 2880. This is quite the pregnancy. But
boy when it's ready to burst, you better run for the hills! - from National
Geographic
MonkieNews! - Gads! I need a...temporary, secretary.
Temporary, secretaire. I need a...! Yes yes yes! It's has
been busy. Likely to stay that way for a while. So! Let's dive
in!
- In the Gallery! - Woo
Hoo! We have quite the star-studded group of artists (plus a
goofy Monkie) this week lining out the Gallery! 8 Pieces in all!
Let's take a look :
Fun First! - We are by no
means putting this first selection up front because it just
so happens to sport the MacMonkies name! It's just
that this piece from Mr. Michele Bugliaro of Mikawares
is soooo much fun and, well...that's me in the
picture! Okay, not really. But it is my twin!! This was
such a cool pic that we couldn't make up our mind where to put
it so we slipped it in both the Fun Department
and the Logo Section. And I dubbed
the pic as MikaMonkies. Thanks Michele!
It is an honor!
Cool Desktop
- Andy Moraitis of Ethereal
Creations adds to our Desktop
pages with some chaos is disguise as Turmoil.
As Andy put it, the piece "started as a study in volumetric
lighting effects" and became the background for another
work. There's art everywhere!
In Your Face 3-D! - We have quite the fine selection of
3-D works starting off with another in
the zen series from Neil
Roberts called...zen1a. It is amazing
how now and zen, a little tweak here and there can create
a whole new outlook! Now that's something to meditate on!
Next up in 3-D is quite a fine piece from Alan Sherwood of EA Design called Wispy
Dreaming. Dream into action!
Also from EA Design is
a piece from Mr. Allen himself titled Aqua
Park. As always, we get a high grade of excellence from Alan
and Ed!
The final three 3-D to round out the squirvey eight are three
from Doc Monk called Mystery Mountain,
Europa, and Out There.
You're sure to enjoy these as you can get as down to earth or
as spaced out as you like. Check 'em out!
Have a piece you want to display?
Check out our Submissions guidelines
and then send it in!
- New Monkie Bundle! -
If you like to add a little pizzazz under your desktop, or just
like to go it alone in the desktop area, these patterns are for
you. Scott Chitwood carved and bundled this far out collection
of patterns called R1 Patterns. Head over to the GUI
page and just press Monkie Bundles!
- Icons 4 Ewe! - We will
officially open our icon section next week! And that's a fact
Jack! Be sure and stop by for your full course of GUI goodies!
- Announcements, Announcements, Announcements!
- We have another, umm...hmmm. Yeah! One of those things coming
on Friday. Roll out the barrels, we'll have a barrel of
fun!

News On The Net...
Come Together - Apple
and Adobe are coming together
to offer a free clinic on how to use the latest version of Adobe products with
OS X. The workshop, "Driven by Design" will take attendees
through all the steps of graphics from design to printing to
the web. Graphic designers, web designers and production artists
are invited to attend, but seating is limited. To register, CLICK
HERE. - from Apple
Burn Baby, Burn - BMG, one of the world's largest music
labels, announced on Monday
that they would be releasing CDs to retailers that are copyright-protected.
They are hoping that customers will not burn CDs and also that
albums will not be released early due to shared music on the
Internet. Because of the recent problem with copyright-protected
CDs' incompatibility with computer CD players, the CDs being
released will have two versions of the albums: One for CD players
and one for playback on PCs. Sounds like their
future sales just went up in smoke.
- from Yahoo
Mobile Messenger - Mobile text messaging was worth every
letter to a woman in Malaysia. She was abducted by two men while
walking to work. They put her in a room in a condominium, and
from that room she typed a message into her phone and left it
for her coworker. Her coworker contacted the police and the police
rescued the women from the room and arrested the men who had
abducted her. Mobile messaging is widely used in Malaysia, as
500 million messages are sent every month. Way
to go, lady! - from Excite
Leading The Way - Since Apple released the Superdrive
in January it has shipped almost half a million Macs that are
equipped with that Superdrive. This fact, combined with Apple's
iDVD 2 software, top-of-the-line video editing software and DVD
media priced at under $5 per disc, has put Apple ahead of the
game in DVD burning. Says Apple's senior director of hardware,
Greg Joswiak, "Apple is leading the desktop DVD revolution."
Now that's a no brainer! - from Apple
Sledgehammer - Gary Wilke of Appleton Wisconsin bought
a $2,600 Gateway PC for
his daughter in January. In the last three months he had to take
the machine in five times for hard drive and sound system problems.
The final time he took it in he couldn't take it anymore, and
he smashed the PC to smithereens with a sledgehammer right there
at the store in front of everybody. "I wonder how many people
are out there complaining and not getting service. It feels good
in a way," he said. The 51-year-old was cited by the police
for disorderly conduct. - from The
Register
April's Fool Again - Bill Gates fell prank to a fake phone
interview on April Fool's Day.
Two men from the Montreal Radio Station CKMF-FM called Gates
pretending to be Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien. They
talked about the economy, insulted the Windows OS and even invited
Gates to a local strip club. "He did not seem angry but
he did not find it so funny," the comic (Sebastien Trudel)
told Reuters. The ten-minute interview was aired on the radio
station the following Tuesday and Wednesday. To hear the audio
clip, head over to EA Design.

Have you Heard?
Dry Vine - Not much in the way of spectacular has been
buzzing through the vine as of late. One source is claiming a
2 button mouse made by Apple to be out soon. However, several
sources reported similar stories almost a year ago. Apple also
started the single button mouse revolution with its simplicity
yet still able to compete with the 2 + button mice. It is easy
to see Apple compromising on this issue since they have
done a great deal of listening to consumer input. But there is
still that stubborn streak that will keep Apple consumers guessing
from now till that asteroid hits. =)

Useless Mac Tip #4 - It really is the simple things
in life that make things so enjoyable. And of course, the fast
cars and...never mind! Let's just get to this week's "useless"
but cool tip!
Sometimes pressing buttons does have its payoffs (unless of
course its your mother's buttons). In the case of computers,
and in this case a Mac, the command key can save you a stretch
or two (most "Commands" probably apply to PC owners,
except sub the Command key with the Control key - but no guarantees).
Here's just a few commands for most web browsers we found:
Command <--- (left arrow) = page back
Command ---> (right arrow) = page forward
Command ^ (up arrow) = page up
and the opposite of the above is of course page down
Then there is:
Command r = reload
Command e = display page source
Of course, if you simply look close in the menu, you will
see bunches so you can sit back with your soda and keyboard on
your belly and not have to spill a drop while reaching for your
mouse! How's that grab ya?!

Just Plain Nutz!
MALE OR FEMALE?
SWISS ARMY KNIFE - male, because even though it appears useful
for a wide variety of work, it spends most of its time just opening
bottles.
KIDNEYS - female, because they always go to the bathroom in
pairs.
TIRE - male, because it goes bald and often is over-inflated.
HOT AIR BALLOON - male, because to get it to go anywhere you
have to light a fire under it ... and, of course, there's the
hot air part.
SPONGES - female, because they are soft and squeezable and
retain water.
WEB PAGE - female, because it is always getting hit on.
SHOE - male, because it is usually unpolished, with its tongue
hanging out.
COPIER - female, because once turned off, it takes a while
to warm up. Because it is an effective reproductive device when
the right buttons are pushed. Because it can wreak havoc when
the wrong buttons are pushed.
ZIPLOC BAGS - male, because they hold everything in, but you
can always see right through them.
SUBWAY - male, because it uses the same old lines to pick
people up.
HOURGLASS - female, because over time, the weight shifts to
the bottom.
HAMMER - male, because it hasn't evolved much over the last
5,000 years, but it's handy to have around.
REMOTE CONTROL - female...Ha!...you thought I'd say male.
But consider, it gives man pleasure, he'd be lost without it,
and while he doesn't always know the right buttons to push, he
keeps trying.
SIGNS YOU HAVE ENTERED THE 21ST CENTURY (Part II)
Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn't
have the first 20 or 30 years of your life, is cause for panic
and turning around to go get it.
Using real money, instead of credit or debit, to make a purchase
would be a hassle and take planning.
Cleaning up the dining room means getting the fast food bags
out of
the back seat of your car.
Your reason for not staying in touch with family is that they
do not
have e-mail addresses.
You consider second-day air delivery painfully slow.
Your dining room table is now your flat filing cabinet
Your idea of being organized is multiple-colored Post-it notes.
You hear most of your jokes via e-mail instead of in person.
You get an extra phone line (or a DSL/cable modem) so you
can get
phone calls.
You disconnect from the Internet and get this awful feeling,
as if
you just pulled the plug on a loved one.
You get up in morning and go online before getting your coffee.
You wake up at 2 am to go to the bathroom and check your E-mail
on your way back to bed.
You start tilting your head sideways to smile. :)
You're reading this.
Even worse; you're going to forward it to someone else

WHY I LOVE WYOMING
When it's Springtime in Wyoming ...
And the gentle breezes blow
At about seventy miles per hour
And it's thirty-two below.
You can tell you're in Wyoming
Cuz the snow's up to your butt
And you take a breath of Springtime air
And your nose holes both freeze shut.
The weather here is wonderful ...
So I guess I'll hang around.
I could never leave Wyoming
Cuz my feet are frozen to the ground.
COMPUTERS VS. AIR CONDITIONERS
How is a computer like an air conditioner?
When you open Windows it won't work!
COMPUTER LANGUAGE
What is the first programming language you learn when studying
computer science?
Profanity.
SAD BUT TRUE
I called a company and asked to speak to Bob. The person who
answered said, "Bob is on vacation. Would you like to hold?"
!
RAIN RAIN
If you pray for rain, don't be surprised if you're struck
by lightning.
- Damien Cannon
DUMB AND DUMBEST
Seen on T-shirt: I am stupid!
ALL SHE WROTE
A priest, a nun, a rabbi, a lawyer, and a doctor walk into
a bar. The bartender takes one look at them and says, "What
is this? A joke?"

Odds and Ends
Stand Up!
Those who stand for nothing fall for anything.
- Alexander Hamilton.
Open Eyes, Shut The Blinds
If you believe everything you read, you better not read.

Did You Know
Did you know that in April of 1964, The Beatles made chart
history when they grabbed the first five Billboard singles positions
with "Can't Buy Me Love," "Twist and Shout,"
"She Loves You," "I Want to Hold Your Hand,"
and "Please Please Me?" Hasn't been done since!

Monkie Law |
Think about this:
When the law was given, man was so afraid of breaking it that
other laws were created to stay away from or avoid the original
law...or in reality, the cosequences of breaking it. The same
was true years ago as it is today. Somebody screws up and the
rest of us suffer since someone has to pass a law to "protect."
But "protect" really translates "control."
And the more we "control," the more freedom we lose.
Why not rather "free" someone? Probably because we
would lose "control" over others and realize how weak
and vulnerable we ourselves truly are.
Strange though...If we loved as we would be loved, would there
be a need for law or control?
